Bio Photo I love Find-A-Grave as a research tool. It's just too difficult to personally visit each and every cemetery in my huge family tree.

If you have any additional info or photos to add to any of my memorial pages, or if you are a close relative and would like a memorial transferred to you, just let me know.

You are welcome to use any photos I've taken and posted for other sites such as Ancestry.com and for personal use. Please just add a line saying where you got the photo so others who come along will know where to look for more info.

I'm actively researching a number of family names, including Vale, Hartman, Hooker, Milburn, Howard, Cornman, Bailey, Stutzman, Yoder, Smith & Berkey (just to name a few).

Re: # 45200521 - James Hughs Lewis
Sue, I checked in the burials book for Gates Cemetery today and found that James was buried there in 1921. His grave location is: NW corner, Row 8. The burial is listed only as: James H. Lewis (1857-1921).

The only burial next to (or very near) James is that of Frederick Lewis (1834-1915). These are also the only Lewises in Row 8, and are quite separate from the graves of any of the other Lewises buried there.

A row with 12 non-consecutive Lewises can be found in Row 9, while other Lewises there are in two family plots on opposite sides of the cemetery.

James' grave in Row 8 is right up next to the fence. The record was transcribed from a burials book in April 1969, not from a walk of the cemetery itself at that time. I don't think there has ever been a marker for this grave, but if there was it may have been a piece of paper with his name/dates on it that fit into a small metal holder that is staked into the ground. There are a number of these out there but of course they're easily removed, and even the ones still there are mostly illegible.

Plot owners book: This was transcribed in April 1981 but it shows no Lewis owners at all. However, the year it was actually compiled is not given, so it may pre-date James' burial in 1921.

Cemetery map: An old hand-drawn map of the cemetery is also undated and shows no burial for James.

The genealogical society members who found and transcribed this information have all passed away and the phone numbers they left for burial records contact people in the Crow area are now reassigned, probably because those folks are gone now too. I was unable to discover who currently has custody of the original burial records.

# 45200521 - James Hughs Lewis
Hi Sue, this pertains to your headstone photo request from 2015.

I walked all of Gates Cemetery (Lane Co, OR) yesterday and found no marked grave of any kind for James H. Lewis. There are two old Lewis family plots there on opposite sides of the property as well as a row of other Lewises near the center. One plot and the row have burials starting in the 1850s.

There are quite a few open spaces between surviving headstones in this cemetery, suggesting past neglect or vandalism, so it's possible there was once a marker for James among some of these other Lewis burials.

I will check the burials book for Gates Cemetery this week when I can stop by the local gen society and see if any earlier cemetery walks picked up a headstone for James. Will post here what I find and I won't list this request as a problem until I've done that last piece of research.

Sorry I don't have better news.

Done. So glad you were able to get a record for Gary too. I kinda wondered why he was mentioned initially but thought I would just take the whole headstone instead of pealing off just Viola. Glad I did!!! Barbara

RE: Emmett Mohr
Hi Sue,
No relation; I'm working on creating memorials for veterans of north-western PA.

It's slow going 'cuz I tend to get easily side-tracked trying to link up all the family members. LOL 0_o

Happy hunting,
Rich

Question
Hi Sue - you sent the following correction to me for Gladys Stella Milburn Andrews:

Gladys' mother was Joseph Powell Milburn's 2nd wife Martha Ann Hunt (#122227146). His first wife Clara Mahoney who is currently attributed to Gladys died BEFORE Gladys was born.

It looks like his first wife, Clara Mahoney died Dec. 3, 1901, the same day Gladys was born. Can you clarify? Thanks!
