RE: Harry Handly Caldwell

I am Harry's first cousin 3x removed.

Harry Handly Caldwell was the son of Jacob White Caldwell b. 1837 who m. Josephine Ralston. Jacob's sister was my Great great grandmother Mary Simpson CALDWELL Armstrong b. 1852 Richmond, KY (m. 1875 steamboat captain Samuel Bailey ARMSTRONG Nashville, TN). Harry was her nephew and how we came by this photo. Mary and Jacob's parents were James Calloway CALDWELL and Amanda Malvina WHITE.

In 1900 census Mary C (Caldwell) Armstrong 'widow' is living in household with her sister Patty White Caldwell b. 1849 and Patty's husband John R. HANDLY b. 1839. and Handly children Fannie b 1871 and Nannie b 1875.
In 1910 census Mary was living with her sister Elizabeth CALDWELL Handly(also widowed from m. Ross Handly) and their son Ross.
So it sounds like the Handly family had multiple relationships with the Caldwells - likely source of his middle name.

I have lots of photos of Mary who d. 1937. She was an amazing woman, widowed with young children (James Caldwell Armstrong and Lilian Bailey Armstrong), she was educated at the Madison Institute in Kentucky and then worked as a school teacher for over 50 years including heading the English department of Hume-Fogg HS 1900-1932 in Nashville). She also escorted young ladies to Europe on cross-Atlantic educational voyages.

Good article with another photo from an interview with his son Harry H Caldwell Jr. in 2000:

I can try to make you a better digital copy if you would like of Harry or other relations and confirm writing on the back. We have drawers full of Ďancientí family photos which I have been cataloguing and trying to get on Geni and Find-A-Grave (because they do not charge a fee) the last 10 years for posterity (to protect them from mold and PC crashes). I am not sure whether this photo is currently in my possession or my momís - but I have seen it recently. I will keep an eye out for it, but do not recall it having a date - It was the original cardboard type that was customarily sent as a gift (not a copy)...There was a note about the Dewey relationship on the back.

Good luck with your research.

My name is Bob Keith, a cousin of H. H. C. My maternal great-great grandfather was William H. H. Ralston, brother of Joseph Neely Ralston, H. H. C.'s grandfather. I am currently writing a book about Harry and his wife Katharine Clark Prosser Hilliker Caldwell. I had not seen that picture of Harry wearing his Dewey Medal. Could you tell me where it was found? I'm trying to determine if he was still an ensign when the picture was taken or an Ltjg. Is the photo dated? place taken?

I have written a book about Judge Ralston, James Hervey [yup Hervey] Ralston, brother of William H. H. and J. N.

Are you related?

Thank you for your help!

RE: Samuel Bird Ralston
I looked for your Mary Ralston but could not find her. There were no visible markers in the section where she was buried. Many of the markers at Mount Auburn are flat cemetery markers that over the years have sunk into the ground and are now covered by grass. If she has one of these markers, it would be difficult to locate.

RE: Nancy America Ralston
I checked and she is already linked to Silas Holcomb Sr. If this is wrong or I am misunderstanding something, please email me offline at

RE: Michael Keith
You're very welcome- glad I could help. No, that was the first time I've been there since the 1990's. I made a trip over that way to hunt down a relative buried near Cherry Tree so on my way back I hit a few cemeteries to try and fulfill some requests that I saw were still pending.

She is the wife of the father-in-law of my 2nd cousin 3x removed. I have just started the research on her and William. I did find a family tree that had his death certificate attached and it states died while visiting relatives. The cause of death indicates it was probably due to an Ulcer. I am assuming they just buried him there rather than ship him home. She died four years later in St.Louis I didn't know it wasn't a family
plot. I assumed they just couldn't afford a headstone. He don't think he was buried in a military cemetery. Will let u know if I find more information.

RE: Lottie and Joseph W. Ralston
I got the info on Lottie Ralston residing at Quincy, Ill. from the cemetery records. I had many of the records transcribed on my own website years ago, but imported them on here so they could help more people. I'll email the pages from the record book to you in a few minutes.
