Thanks for adding the photos of my Dad's grave marker Memorial # 64946166. I know you went out of your way to help.
Since my Mom died in August, my family has decided to replace the marker for Dad with a large one with both their names. Would you please consider removing the pictures of the current marker?
Thanks for your help.

Katherine Morrow Sweeney Devereaux
Thank you for your efforts on behalf of all of us!
Here is a bit of information on Kitty, my great grand mother. Born, 1848 Died July 1927

Decease - Divorced - Marriage Abandoned
The records and documents of marriages of Catherine Theresa Morrow & (1) George Sweeney and (2) Nicholas B. Devereaux are attached in the marriage items sources.

The interesting items are:

1-George W. Sweeney's death certificate of 22 July 1909 list him as a widower.

2-Catherine (Kathryn) (Kitty) Sweeney and Nicholas B. Devereaux's marriage record indicate that her previous marriage was "resolved by death". The marriage was performed on 11 March 1891 and George W. Sweeney did not die until 22 July 1909.

3-Catherine Morrow Sweeney Devereaux lists her birth place as New York City and her residence as Coolsville (Cowlesville) in the marriage record in Oil City, Pennsylvania. In 1891 she did indeed reside at Cowlesvill, Wyoming, New York and was using the name Kitty Sweeney. Mr Devereaux did reside in Rochester, New York at this time and it is to his residence that they returned to make their home.

4-The marriage was performed in Oil City, Pennsylvania by a "Minister of the Gospel".

How could this relate--George W. Sweeney was a documented member of the Catholic Faith. He and Catherine Teresa (Kathryn) (Kitty) Morrow were married in St. Mary's Chruch, Clinton, Oneida, NY. At that time, divorce would result in "excommunication" or deprivation of the sacraments and would cast derision on the families involved, including the parents of all concerned. In this case it appears that George W. Sweeney and Catherine Morrow Sweeney mutually agreed to abandon their marriage and speak of it as "resolved by death". Our speculation is that the distance from the residences of all concerend was to provide a protective barrier. Also, marriages not performed in the Catholic Faith were considered not binding by the church and did not carry the threat of excommunication.

You're welcome. Will be you adding the other edits I sent via SAC? She comes from a prominent family whom I'm documenting going back several generations. Thank you for your time :)

That would be very generous of you and much appreciated.
I am related as a 14th cousin. But was very good friends with his grandson, Charles Hunter Chatfield and will have pleasure in continuing Charles genealogical work on his side of the family as he passed away in 2006.

Kind regards

Colin Chatfield
