I love paying it forward. As a "forensic findagraver", I delight in helping others find, and accurately link, their family members.
My family members roll their eyes at the very word "genealogy", so I'm the self-appointed keeper of the flame for MOORE, POWELL, HUSTED, FRADD, and DAVIS family surnames [Missouri, Kansas, New Jersey, Iowa and Virginia in particular]. If you are a fellow researcher of those names, please feel free to contact me ... we might be distantly related!
CORE BELIEFS: Findagrave is a tool; not a source for others to copy and paste information into their public trees on other websites. Information on findagrave, just like any other site, can be misleading. Please do your research before you re-post a memorial created by another findagraver. Mistakes go viral and are nearly impossible to undo.
I do not believe that others should collect any and all members of the family's surname with whom they have the closest ties. Your great-great-great uncle Joe twice removed probably had several other descendants with an equally vested interest in preserving his memory and his history. I highly discourage "surname collecting".
That said, I don't adhere to Findagrave's usual guidelines regarding transfers. If you are indirectly related to an individual, yet have valuable historical information and are willing to maintain the upkeep of this memorial, please ask me. More than likely, I will make the transfer to you.
OBITUARIES: My personal preference is to cite the source of the obituary, provide salient information, and redact the names of the living in order to protect their identities and privacy. If a living family member contacts me directly and provides permission for their name to be included in the bio, I will gladly include that information.
PET PEEVE: Please don't steal my pictures and add them to your website. I'll most likely grant your request if you'll give me credit for having taken the picture. The debate will always exist over what's public and private domain once it's posted to the internet - but my personal philosophy is that photographs should not be copied and pasted without credit given to the source from which it was taken.
BOTTOM LINE: I'm friend, not foe. I'll bend over backwards to assist you in your research. I'll work with you regarding transfers. But please, do unto me as you would have me do unto you.
