Looking for relatives of James M. Baugh
Susann,
I'm an archaeologist working on a project in Houston. Recently, I discovered a cistern with a very rare and unusual feature: a signature. The signature reads "M Baugh, Natchez Miss." I've been able to identify it as belonging to James M. Baugh (there is a patch within the cistern that covers the "J" and small portion of the "M") of Natchez, Mississippi. James settled in Houston by 1870, and many years of the Houston City Directory have him listed as a brick mason. Several pieces of evidence lead me to believe that Baugh built the cistern in 1884. At the time, James M. Baugh lived at 36 Semmes, between Liberty and Providence. This was two blocks east and a half block south of the cistern location. The residence was put on the city water system sometime around 1890, at which point it would have fallen into disuse as a water storage feature. The upper neck of the cistern was severely burned, and it appears to have been quickly closed off with a crude concrete and brick cap immediately after the great 5th Ward fire of 1912.

If you know of any relatives of James Monroe Baugh that still live in Houston who would be interested in seeing their great great great grandfather's signature and handiwork, please contact me. Thanks,

Jason

Oyce's daughter
RE: Are you my cousin?
Hi, Susann,
I am not related to the Cron family (as far as I know) but the Archer family, members of which originally moved to Houston from Brownsville, Texas, shortly after the Civil War. They settled on Clay Avenue until the house was raised in the late '50's for the building of one of Houston's outer belts. My Susann would have had the maiden name of Clark and would probably be in her late sixties. Her mother would have been called Pat, though that was not her official given name. Pat would have had a sister named Florence, and Florence would have had a son named Randy. I was hopeful that you were the long lost cousin of my childhood. However, thank you for taking the time to respond to my query in such a prompt manner.
Sincerely, Oyce's daughter
