I am a native of Austin Texas. Have lived elsewhere during my life, but resided in Austin the majority of my life. My husband and I had been been raising our 2nd family since 1995 (raising 3 grandchildren since 1995 when they were 1, 3, and 5). We both retired from IBM Austin and only have one of our grandchildren still at home with us and we just moved to Oklahoma on December 19, 2009. We still have our home in Austin (may sell or lease it), but are now living in Oklahoma (our youngest granddaughter started her 2nd term of 10th grade on January 4, 2010). |
I've been doing genealogy research on my family since late 70's/early 80's when it required spending much time in the libraries and ordering mircrofilm to be borrowed from Salt Lake City and sent to my local LDS library. We've certainly come a long way since the 80's haven't we? We have so many online resources today and the databases get larger by the day. I am a member of the Stephen F Austin (DRT) Daughters of the Republic of Texas (descendent of ANDEW MILLER line) and a member of the DAR in Ardmore, OK under MOSES DAWSON CHERRY partriot who is my 5th great grandfather (via their son: Samuel Torbert CHERRY & wife Sarah R Bell-Cherry's daughter: ELIZABETH ANN CHERRY who married ROBERT JAMES GILL whom are my 3rd great grandparents).
Having ancestry.com, findagrave.com and more and more data being made available online it certainly helps us genealogy buffs.
I have only been a member and volunteer at findagrave for about 6 months (as of May 2009), but I find it a great resource where we can pitch in and help each other from afar to locate our relatives. I thank all who have helped me as a "newbie" to findagrave and hope I can help others too. I've made some very dear friends through findagrave over the past 6 months and look forward to meeting many more, so have changed by contributor page volunteer to our new zip code 73098 (previously 78729).
Some of my primary surnames being researched are: LEHMANN, DUCKWORTH, HYATT, SPERLING, HEISSIG, FRANKE, ECKHARDT, PORCHE, FUCHS, SHELTON, WEST, BIRD/BYRD, DOROUGH-DORROUGH, COCHRAN, DAVIS, CHERRY, MILLER, NEAL, LYNCH, DAVIDSON, OLIVER, NALLEY, TURNER, LOTT, GILL, CAGE, CAYCE, FOX, FRANKE, LEE, WALLACE, AIKMAN, TEAS, BLACKWELL, TEAGUE, HARRISON, and my husband's FRENCH surname line.

|dm13||RE: Robert James Gill & Col John Porter Gill|
You've been a busy girl, Lynda, Thanks for the great data. Here's the info source on John P. Gill's marriage. It's from the published marriage records of Greene co Ala.. He married Jane O. Martin on 14 Aug 1827. Below are the notes on JPG from the notes portion of his page in my database. Much of the data I have on him comes directly from primary sources in my book collection.(I collect out of print and rare Texas books)
John Porter came to Brazoria Co. Texas in May, 1831. Was at the capture of San Antonio de Bexar Dec 1835. Got 640 acres for this. Also got 320 acres of bounty land. Robert J. Gill got most of his property in his will. John Ben Milam Gill, son of R.J. got some of the land. At San Jacinto, he was 1st Lt in Capt. Thomas McIntire's 5th co. of the second infantry regiment of Texas Volunteers. He arrived in May 1831 with William and John Martin. They must have been his wife's brothers.
He was elected Justice of the Peace on 8 April, 1844. He was elected Sheriff of Brazoria co on 13 Jul 1846. he left office on August 6,1850. He is not on any 1850 Texas census. It is possible that he went back to be with his mother in Greene co Ala, as she was apparently sick and died on 27 Nov 1850. He is on p. 359 of the 1860 Ft. Bend, Texas census.
Here are my brief notes on RJ Gill:
He became a Methodist minister at some point. He is on p. 340 Winston, Miss. 1850 census listed as a farmer. He is on p. 89 Gonzales, Tx 1860 census. Thrall's History of Texas Methodists says in the appendix that he began traveling for the church in 1855 and he located (stopped traveling) in 1857. He was riding circuit for the church in those years, but why he stopped, I don't know. He is again listed as a Methodist minister in Blanco co Tx in 1880.
I guess were are cousins from the Gill connection, since we both share RJ Gill as a grandfather. He is my ggggrandfather. RJ Gill's daughter Mary P married Thomas Walker Jones. Their eldest daughter Mary Elizabeth married Thomas Arsene LeBleu. Their son Marvin Arsene married Christie Vickers, and their daughter Fay was my mother.

I am an RJ Gill descendant though his daughter Mary Priscilla. Thanks for the hard work on RJ's family. Thanks to you I came up with two new names. I was totally unaware of RJs eldest daughter, who was married when the 1850 census came out. I was also baffled as to what the name was of the daughter (Lenora) born in 1833, since it is undecipherable on the 1850 census. RJ's son John was named John Ben Milam Gill. The name came from his uncle John Porter Gill, who was a member of the Texas Army at the 1st battle of San Antonio, where his commander, Ben Milam, was killed. RJ then named his son John after the fallen hero. I also am pretty sure that the land on which Snake Creek cemetery is located was originally owned by John Porter Gill, who also was a Captain at the Battle of San Jacinto. JP got a lot of land grants, and I think the Snake Creek cemetery land was one of them. He was also Sheriff of Brazoria County. JP Gill came to Texas in 1831 with two brothers of his deceased wife Jane Martin, who died in Greene co Ala sometime after they were married in 1827. When he died, JP Gill willed most of his land to JBM Gill. JBM Gill is buried in the Beeville cemetery in Beeville Texas. Disregard all, if you knew this information already.

I just wanted to let you know that I enjoyed reading about your ancestors on the Blanche memorial. I came across it while reading up on the burials at the Terrell State Hospital--and I started that because I have traveled through the area a lot over the last 4-5 years and I always find it interesting to study up a little about the history of a particular area. My husband is working near there and when I travel to be with him, I treat the children to impromptu history lessons! I am proud to say that the oldest has very high scores in history-HAHA!
Thanks again for the interesting write up!
