I no longer make changes, additions, transfers from messages left on my contributor page. Please follow FindAGrave procedures by using the Edit tab on the memorial page to request changes, additions, request transfers, etc.|

Find a Grave has implemented a new way to submit Edits! Unfortunately, there are far too many members for Find a Grave to notify everyone via email, so it's up to us to get the word out. If every member posts this message (or similar) in their profile, hopefully we can help spread the word.
To suggest a correction (SAC) click on the edit tab of the memorial that needs to be corrected. Then click on the link which best describes where your edit should occur. Enter your correction, when you're done, click submit edit. Your request will be sent to the manager of the memorial and will appear in the managers' profile under the Edits tab.
Managers will no longer receive emails. They must go directly to their profile page and click on the Edits tab. Managers can approve, deny or ignore, suggested corrections. It's quick and easy!
Requesting a transfer other corrections are still handled the same way. Click on "suggest any other correction or addition," type your message and press "send this message." The manager of the memorial will receive an email.
Please ask permission before posting my personal family photographs, photographs I have taken of grave stones or biographical material I have written from my memorial pages on this site to Ancestry.com or any other website or personal webpages.

How do I get a relative's memorial transferred to me?
First, Determine if you really need the memorial transferred to you for management. Transferring of management should only be requested If you have extensive changes to make to a memorial. You can add photos and suggest corrections without having to request management. Simply having someone in your family tree is not grounds for a management transfer request. With hundreds of thousands of contributors, we have many overlapping family trees and it would be impossible for all contributors to manage their entire tree.
Many thanks to everyone who has contributed information and photos for my memorials. I usually link to the individual contributor using HTML code. If this is unacceptable to you just let me know you prefer to remain anonymous.

Do you have any other info about this person? I have a feeling this might be the same Daniel Tompkins who graduated from West Point in 1820.

Thank you for this help. This appears to be my grandfather/grandmother and I will follow your info on the pension card number. In the grand scheme of things this is not a big deal. To the family member (as yet unknown) who will want this information in fifty or a hundred years it could be a game changer.

We have been in touch with the cemetery for several years and to no avail. My mom was a child when Sgt. Reitmeyer died. I have his enlistment papers, newspaper accounts of his death (whit the dates on the stone) but not a death certificate. His wife, my grandmother often took us to visit the grave and I visit it whenever I am close to West Point. I think this attempt through Find A Grave was an end run on my part to move the military/government to recognize his real name .

Sadly, I do not. All I can find is mention of the 1860 Census, showing him living with Mary A., Sarah, Rose, and an Elizabeth Scoppen. IF that's him--birthplace Maryland, living in D.C. in 1860, aged 42 at the time of Census. There are Sarahs at Congressional, but I don't know which, if any, would be the right one.

I'm not sure how to handle this. Wesley is a terrific source (I have "Dead People On The Move," and it has been a tremendous help, especially with the older K section at Rock Creek), but the cemetery not having record of someone doesn't necessarily mean they're not there. I've come across dozens--possibly hundreds--of folks whose stones are standing at Congressional and Rock Creek, but who are nowhere to be found in the records. Plus, some of the misspellings in the cemetery records are almost impossible to decipher. I'm not lecturing (!!! Never !!!), just trying to express my concerns here. I've moved that memorial to Congressional with a note that the records show a move to Oak Hill. And I think that's going to have to be good enough.

Yes, I found that odd as well. I won't be volunteering there until next week and as I recall there wasn't much on either family. I imagine it was handed down through the generations. I will however look and see if anything is there. I will keep you posted.

You have been VERY helpful. I, too, was thinking that unlinking from relatives and making sure they're linked on the newer memorial in the new cemetery is the way to go, just to keep confusion to a minimum--I can put relationships in the bio field.

In the past, I've been moving or deleting memorials of folks who've been moved from one cemetery to another, even though I know someone will come in behind me and recreate because the records are out there showing the original cemetery. But I noticed today that a number of people do not delete--instead, they put a note on the memorial letting folks know of the move. What is your opinion on this? I was under the impression that duplicates, except for cenotaphs, are not okay. But it seems smarter to leave that original up with the notation of the move. What are your thoughts? I really respect what you do here, and I'm hoping you might have some insight.
