Hi.......Mary Speakman is not related to me. I found her obit among others that I didn't need. It seemed a waste to throw them out.
Thank you for the information on Mary Hopper. I am very interested in her New York connection since I have very little on the Hoppers at that time.
I visited the Hopper cemetery several years ago and I transcribed tombstones for many of the Hoppers. I have Mary's death date listed as Jan 6, 1880. But I can't remember if I got that date from the tombstone or from a copy of a cemetery transcription that had been done in the 1970's I believe.
However, I also rediscovered a transcription I had done from the county courthouse in Oquaka, Il. It says: Mary Hopper, White, Female, date of death Jan 6, 1881, 73 yr 1 mo 13 days.
Date of report: Feb 8, 1881. Widow, born Vermont. Resident of Illinois for 45 years. Place of death-Hoppers Mills, Ills. Cause of death- Chronic Hepatites, complications - Dropsey. Duration of disease 2 months. Place of burial, Hoppers Mills. Date of burial - Jany 9, 1881. Undertaker: Underki????, Burlington Iowa. Name and residence of physican- F M Jackson, Hoppers Mills.
So the death register, along with the 1880 census would indicate that the tombstone is incorrect.
I did not see anything on Samantha Titus in the cemetery transcription or any of my notes. I would be interested in hearing anything you know about Mary's husband, Lambert. I know they were married in New York but have no other information.
