It is an honor to create memorials for our WW2, Korea, and Vietnam war dead.

Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz:
"They fought together as brothers in arms; they died together and now they sleep side by side...To them, we have a solemn obligation the obligation to ensure that their sacrifice will help make this a better and safer world in which to live."

I have recently completed a five year project traveling to Hawaii annually from the mainland to photograph headstones for all of our WW2 dead at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) in Honolulu. I have added over 10,000 photos to memorials at the cemetery. Prior to 2008, few of the memorials had headstone photos added and I made it a commitment to travel their annually to finish this project which I completed in 2013.

Interred at the cemetery are men and women from all branches of the service, US Marine Corp, US Army, US Navy, US Coast Guard, and US Merchant Marines. US Marines from the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th divisions are interred there, along with soldiers of the US Army's 6th, 7th, 11th Airborne, 23rd (Americal), 24th, 25th, 27th, 31st, 32nd, 33rd, 37th, 40th, 43rd, 77th and 96th infantry divisions.

They came from all of the Pacific war's most significant battles, beginning with several hundred internees who were lost at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. There are over a 1000 burials of men from the US Marine 3rd 4th, and 5th Divisions who died at Iwo Jima, which comprises the single largest group from one conflict.

The first burials at the cemetery were held on January 4, 1949, more than three years after the war in the Pacific had ended.

Thank you for your reply. I would be most grateful if you could e-mail that to me so that I might add it to the site. If I run across this type of situation in my research, I may do this again in the future...If that is ok...Again, happy holidays to you and yours,

Sincerely, Eric

Find A Grave Memorial# 140386543
Hello and happy holidays to you!

I have noticed that you seem to have access to U.S., Headstone Applications for Military Veterans, 1925-1963 on I am working on finding a burial location for Hugo Ernest Voth (1920-1944), listed on NARA Army casualties for Wichita County, Kansas. If it wouldn't be too much trouble, I was wondering if you might be able to look into that database and provide me with his burial location so that I might complete his memorial. This would be very helpful to me indeed and would be very much appreciated.

Thank you again for all you do on Find-A-Grave!

RE: Alfred Farley
Hi again, Jeff. I'm going to try to visit Oahu in 2015. Since you've been so often, would Spring or early Fall be good times to go? Also, can you see the ocean from the gravesites? Thank you again for your dedication to this task. I wish his family could have seen the pictures. They are all gone. Since he was only 18, he didn't have a chance to have a family of his own.

Alfred Farley
Thank you so much for the photos of Alfred Farley's grave. He was serving on the USS California at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack. His brother Ed was a dear friend of mine. He showed me the telegrams received by his parents regarding notification of the death of his brother on December 7, 1941. Ed told me that no one in the family had visited his brother's gravesite. I haven't had a chance to visit Hawaii yet but I'm so grateful for these photos. Ed passed away in 2005. He served in WWII as well. Thank you again for honoring those who served and died so long ago. We won't forget them or their sacrifice.
