Volunteering with the Horry County Historic Cemetery Registration Project has taken us to cemeteries a good distance away as Horry County is quite large. The goal of this project is to support the existence of a cemetery for the future, the location of it's burials and names of the deceased buried there. The project consists of surveying the entire cemetery by photographing and gps'ing each gravesite. This information is kept by the Planning Department of Horry County and made available when building permits are requested. Our photos are also posted to findagrave in the hopes of helping others with their family research. Hopefully our efforts will be used by many who are researching their ancestors and who want to visit the final resting places of their family members. If you would like to use any of our stone photos we have taken you are welcome to do so.

QUOTE FROM author DAVID EAGLEMAN:
“There are three deaths. The first is when the body ceases to function. The second is when the body is consigned to the grave. The third is that moment, sometime in the future, when your name is spoken for the last time.” - David Eagleman

The Grand Strand Genealogy Club held in Chapin Library, Myrtle Beach, SC, meets 2nd Saturday of the month, 10:30 am 1st floor conference room.

RESEARCHING: Rogerson, Clemons, Godwin, Porter, Wiehrs, Asendorf, Wittschen, White, Lancaster, Tarver, Partridge. Husband's side: Perhala, Zima, Kuchta.

My personal belief: "To each of you reading this, if you are a cemetery walker, then God Bless for your energy. And if you document your findings with photos or entries on fag.com, God Bless again and I'm grateful for your work done and your future efforts. Each grave contains someone's loved one who has passed away. Each life had meaning and still influences those left behind. We carry our loved ones in our hearts even after they are gone from this earth."
Blessings,
Susan Rogerson Perhala

HOW TO READ A DETERIORATING STONE:
spray water may help, sometimes in combination with a soft toothbrush. Sometimes I put the toothbrush into the dirt beside the stone, using the dirt like nature's ink, and rub the toothbrush (dirt and all) across the inscription/dates. Too much water and you get nothing.

Another option is to use aluminum foil on the stone surface. Enough foil to wrap around the corners of the stone. Use soft toothbrush to brush across the foil and get an impression of what's on the stone. Remove the foil and take it to a shaded place to be able to read the impression on the foil.

Sometimes I am lucky enough to find the information I need on ancestry, maybe a birth or death certificate, sometimes an obit that gives date information or names spouse/parents, etc.

Hi,
I did post a photo to Mr Reeves.
I did not photograph him because his side of the headstone was not engraved and I thought he was still living. The one I put on his site has a better image of his name.

Hi. Sorry, no, the grave is apparently unmarked. I wrote that in the "problem" section of the photo request, so that should have come to you as the requester, as a note from me separately. I took a lot of photo requests last night and the system limits the number I can have, so maybe that notification didn't go through. The photos I took are of the area of the numbered grave (26-A-15-21). In both photos, he is buried in the unmarked gap between the other stones, in the foreground. In this case, because the neighboring stones had numbers and the row is sequential, I'm pretty confident this is his space, but if you want you could call the office to confirm. They should have a notation of whether or not there is a stone for him.

Elizabeth Birt in Long Branch Cemetery
Susan,

I went today to photograph your Birt Family requests... In the Birt Family section I could not find an Elizabeth Birt (1880-1948). There are numerous small infant graves with very small stones and two plots which appear to be adult unmark graves. I searched the other Birt Family burials at Long Branch, but could not locate an Elizabeth Birt. She may be one of those unmarked graves.

Susan, are you a relative of William Humphrey Rogerson son of Job Rogerson in the Bear Grass township community? Job is my GG grandfather's brother.

RE: Rogerson photos
I just saw this message, I'm learning to read the how to manage Find a Grave, Yes, after my mom died the family found all these old photo in her house. Luckily my 97 yr old aunt knew who was in each photo. I do have a question I am not find how to fix. I created a cemetery and named it just the Mizelle family cemetery but now I would like to rename it Henry Mizelle family cemetery. How do I rename a cemetery? Kay
