Orr Cemetery Sugar Run Road, Lee Co., VA
It's been 22 years since I was in Lee County, VA researching Ely, and Woodard/Woodward genealogy. We visited many cemeteries while we were there. I am trying to put information on findagrave that my parents and I gathered so long ago.

I was wondering about the date of this photo, is it quite recent?. In this cemetery, where David and Rhoda (Ely) Orr are buried, I have also Henry Hyden Woodward & His wife Elizabeth Ely Woodward. (Rhoda & Elizabeth were sisters). I believe Henry H. Woodward's parents also were buried there.

How close to the house was this cemetery? Is this the cemetery that is behind the farmyard and back through the pasture? I am trying to determine if there are two cemeteries on the original John Ely property on Sugar Run. Twenty-two years ago, a (now deceased) relative who was living in the area, showed us where John, Barbara, and Jane Ely were buried in unmarked graves in a cemetery with other gravestones, on Sugar Run. We have photos of that place from that long ago, off Road 659, through the farmyard, through 3 gates in a pasture. (Of course, the farmyard that was then and the gates may be gone now).

Any information that you can provide would be helpful. Thanks so much, Julie

RE: Burwells at Greenwood
My cousin said that he also checked at New Gray and they did have M.P.Burwell, with the dates the same as Mary, listed, so he wonders if she and son were buried at New Gray and then moved to Greenwood when William died. Cousin says Greenwood didn't open until 1900. May be the reason you found someone at New Gray. Maybe some of the other family members wanted everyone together at the bigger cemetery. Cousin mentioned the daughter as being buried nearby and I checked and you already have put through a link for her.

Gotta love it when we can reunite all these family members.

happy hunting, donna

RE: Burwells at Greenwood
I'm currently transcribing a funeral home's records and I've seen, more than once, where the cemetery was listed and then crossed out and changed to another one - so obit in the paper said the first one, but they were actually buried in the second one. So nothing surprised me. I do believe that both New Gray and Greenwood are on the north side of Knoxville, so maybe the same proximity contributed to the confusion. Hopefully my cousin will post the photos on your records. I told him you had moved them over to Greenwood. He didn't know you could "move" records - we've taught the old dog a new trick! Moving records rather than having to re-create them, is a nifty tool to have.

He also mentioned something about another relative, so I need to go check that out and see what he said.

Burwells at Greenwood
Just heard back from my cousin and the Burwells are at Greenwood - he photographed the tombstones and said he would upload the photos later on today. I requested that he put the photos on your records at New Gray, since they are earlier than my records - or perhaps you might want to go ahead and move them over to Greenwood now.

Guess the tombstones being at Greenwood trumps your family lore that they were at New Gray.

Glad it is getting sorted out. I'll delete my records after it is all said and done.

Thanks, donna

RE: Burwells at Greenwood
I sent an email to my cousin to see if he, since he's local, would be able to check at Greenwood - especially if there might be tombstones there. Haven't heard back from him yet. In any event, I will delete my duplicates, just leaving them there for his benefit for now until it gets settled.

Burwells at Greenwood
I believe my info came from a reprint of a WPA document done in the 30s for burials at Greenwood. They did their canvas of the cemetery from the actual stones and not burial records, so they probably are buried at Greenwood.

Do you want me to put in a request for photos and see if a local volunteer can find them? Or, I can contact my cousin there and see if he can get out to Greenwood to verify their burial.

I will, of course delete their records but for now, it might be easier for someone to find them with their records at Greenwood until we find out if they are at Greenwood or New Gray.

Noon grave
Hello Amelia,

You posted a photo on the memorial for Frank Noon, #39303930. I just added his wife and was hoping you'd post the photo to her memorial also since they share a stone. Her memorial is #138118237

snodgrass corrections
Hi there.. You sent me a request to change locations for Pattie Snodgrass & Golden Orr and I want to make sure to use the correction place. There is the one on Sugar Run which you said is incorrect and then there is one with only 4 and another with 15 interments. Please let me know if it is the one with 4 that you would like me to move them too.

RE: Robert D Bradley
Sorry, I am not related to any Bradleys nor do I know any of their ancestry. I just photograph & transcribe cemeteries then add them to findagrave. Sorry I can't be of any help to you. Good luck in your searching.
