Thanks to a lady named Annette and the photo she placed on Find A Grave, I was able to break through a brick wall in my quest to document the family tree. Since then I've placed a number of requests. I am very grateful to the folks who took pictures and filled those requests.

I pretty much limit myself to taking pictures in the San Francisco National Cemetery in the Presidio of San Francisco. It's an absolutely beautiful place with lawn that would make any gardener envious and with breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay.

If there is anything I put up on this web site that needs correcting or that you would like me to remove, please let me know. If you would like me to transfer a memorial to you, please let me know. Be sure you are logged in and then use the edit tab. With the exception of my own family's memorials, I would be happy to make the transfer.

Through Find A Grave I've been privileged to come in contact with some really wonderful people. This is a team effort and it is amazing how this database has grown. It is fun, even though it can occasionally be awkward when I tell someone I take tombstone pictures. :-) There have been many kind e-mails and public messages. While it is always nice to get a pat on the back, that is not why I do it. I do it in the hopes that what I do might help others as much as the work of others has helped me. Over the years there have been a few disagreements, very few. With an exchange of private e-mails disagreements usually get worked out. That is part of the teamwork. But I find public messages that are not polite to be uncalled for. I was raised to believe that you praise in public and criticize in private.

Johan Kroplin and Christine Kroplin from Mecklinberg, Germany had Wilhelmina. They settled in Will County, IL (Southwest suburb of Chicago).

Johan Schlekau (John) February 22, 1839- September 20, 1904- 60 years old) was born in Lneburg, Germany (31 miles SE of Hamburg) (married Wilhelmina Kroplin Schlekau (October 10, 1850- January 15, 1909- 68 years old) who was from Hamburg according to the 1880 census.
A blizzard and temperatures of −18 F (−28 C) occurred on January 1, 1864 in the Chicago, IL area. On January 21, 1864 in Joliet, IL, John Schlekau enlisted in the Civil War (War Between the States) for a 3 year period but only served 18 months due to wounded in action with an honorable discharge on June 3, 1865 at Fort Douglas, IL. He was almost 25 years old. During his military service he was assigned to Company F of the 64th Regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Company F was comprised of volunteers from Will County, IL. John came from Frankfort, IL (southwest suburb of Chicago). John married Wilhelmina when he returned from military service when Wilhelmina was 16 years old and John was 27 years old.

I went to the Minnesota Historical Society at the Minnesota History Museum in St. Paul, MN. I made copies and uploaded the death certificates of Albert, Frederick, father and son Johan. I also have Edward and Christina Neumann's but can't upload them until I find their grave.

Edward John Neumann (June 24, 1861-May 10, 1922- 60 years old) married Christina Schlekau (Schleker) (April 3, 1867-November 30, 1935-68 years old) on June 26, 1885 at St Peter, MN. They lived at 211 N. Elm St, Fairmont, MN since 1891. Edward was a merchant and retired 12 years before his death at the age of 48 years old. Edward had cancer of the esophagus for 1 year.

Edward and Christina had 11 children. Christina died of Parkinson for 6 months and pneumonia for 3 days. She was 68 years old. They are both buried at Lakeside Cemetery, Fairmont, MN. (Martin county)

RE: William Francis Schlekau # 159772090
yes, Christina Schlekau was my great grandma. Do you have any connection to them or further information about them? The biggest problem I'm having is I can't find Edward John and Christina Neumann's grave in New Ulm, MN (I've found great, great grandparents- William Edward and Henrietta. Any help there?

Johan and Wilhelmine Schlekau had 9 children. Christine was born in Illinois after he returned from military service; the rest were born in MN. Johan died of complications after surgery of gall stones. He and Wilhelmina are buried in Greenhill Cemetery, St Peter, MN.

1. Christina (April 3, 1867-November 30, 1935- aged 68 years) (Neumann)
2. Anna (1870) (Engel)
3. Albert (June 21, 1871- December 30, 1936- aged 65 years)
4. Johan (1875-May 17, 1945- aged 70 years)
5. Fredrick (June 6, 1879- May 4, 1955- aged 75 years)
6. William (April 13, 1881- February 21, 1915- aged 33 years)
7. Wilhelmine (December 10, 1885- May 6, 1887- aged 17 months)
8. Louis (April 4, 1889- October 16, 1938- aged 49 years)
9. Herman

Christina (April 3, 1867-November 30, 1935- aged 68 years) married Edward John Neumann (June 24, 1861-May 10, 1922- aged 60 years) on June 26, 1885 at St Peter, MN. They had 11 children. They died in Martin County, MN.

Murray McCaslin
Thank you for giving the management of his memorial to me. If you 'd like to take a look at what I've added, go to Early Murray McCaslin, Find A Grave Memorial# 106050571. Yes, that is what he was named as a child. When he got old enough to choose what he was called the Early disappeared.

I understand - and falls can be serious. I have a cousin who is driving from Spokane to Anaconda this summer and offered to look for graves along the way. It's also possible Gloria is in Butte, where she died. There just isn't any record.
So please don't slide down any hills on my behalf!
And thanks for the link to the military grave locator - it will come in handy for several other relatives.

Thanks again!

Hi Carol, you posted a picture for Henry Edwards, for his grave at SF Natl Cemetery - Section DE Site 391-AA.

I'm trying to find the burial for Henry's wife - my 1st cousin, once removed - Gloria Jane Senz. She died in Butte, MT on 24 Feb 2003. I can't find a grave there, and was wondering if she was brought to SF to join her husband. Is there any (easy) way for you to check, the next time you are at this cemetery? A good way for me to check via email, a website, or phone call?

I now live in Florida so it's a bit too far...

Thanks so much for all your hard work!

Thanks for the message about the info I had on the Findagrave memorials for the two mentioned above. You were quite right on both counts and I've made the changes. Also sent you a longer email so make sure to check that as well.

Best, Barry
