I am a retired health care professional who is interested in genealogy among other things. I grew up on Long Island, went to school in Texas and Georgia, lived and worked in North Carolina and have recently relocated to South Carolina. I enjoy hiking and am always pleased to come across old, out of the way, cemeteries. I've been trying to locate family graves in Pennsylvania and was using Find a Grave when it occured to me that I would enjoy helping others trying to find graves. Please note that as of 2015, I will no longer be making edits to any memorials that I have created unless accompanied by documentation of the edit requested. In absence of documentation, I invite you to request that I transfer the memorial to you for you to do with as you like. I am not a "numbers" person.
RE: Whitaker Cemetery Pam, I did get your message but haven't had a chance to respond. Our computer had been acting up, and last week I was actually going to our library to do some find-a-grave posts. I've been working on my mother's family, the Crouch family from Saluda, SC. The computer seems to be doing better now. Our son doctored on it yesterday. ha I'll send you an e-mail. So glad to hear that you have the book Our Children's Ancestry. I wish I could take care of the Whitaker graveyard outside of Milledgeville like you do for the cemetery in North Carolina. I'll be back in touch with you soon. Take care.
RE: Whitaker Cemetery Hi Pamela, I wish that you could see the Whitaker Graveyard outside of Milledgeville, Baldwin County, GA. It is closed to the public. I managed to see it in 2013 with help of some friends of Baldwin County Cemetery Association. I had hoped to get the cemetery cleaned possibly with their help. They no longer do this. The cemetery is on hunting grounds and is being swallowed by the forest. You can see pictures of it on find-a-grave. Look up cemetery and put in Whitaker, Baldwin County, GA. You can see the history I added and the graves. Have you seen the Whitaker Chapel in Enfield, NC(built by Richard and Elizabeth Cary Whitaker)? My husband and I were there in November driving home from Delaware. I took pictures of the chapel and loved the cemetery behind the chapel, so many Whitaker's buried there. I've since been in touch with Betsy Roberts on facebook. She has the chapel on facebook, and I had posted my picture on that site. Betsy is so nice and has added me to a site on old churches. I'm hoping to go to a homecoming at Whitaker Chapel on June 12. Pamela, if you will send me your address on e-mail, I will be glad to send you a CD that has the book Our Children's Ancestry written by Sarah Cantey Whitaker Allen on it. Sarah was from Milledgville. My grandfather had a signed copy of this book. One of my cousins scanned the entire book on CD, and my aunt in Sullivan's Island, SC, gave me a copy of the CD. I caught the genealogy fever BAD. ha This book is amazing with so much history on the Whitaker family, the Cantey family and other families. My e-mail address is email@example.com Look forward to hearing from you again, Pamela.
RE: Strauch yes, Barbara is my source. (small world). If one had to guess, I would guess that Carl Strauch had a sister who married a Protz.
I have recent photos of the cemetery plot where Carl and Bertha are buried with 2 of their children, Emma Pauline Strauch (never married) and Harry Corolis (?) Strauch who was gassed in WWI. He died in 1960 and supposedly his wife (a wonderful Canadian woman) arranged for a gravestone marker before she returned toCanada However the marker did not happen. I was at his funeral. I was thinking about adding a marker and that is actually why I came across your writeup on Carl's death.
The people who stayed with my grandparents were relatives who just came from Germany. Their family name was Protz. They were my father's cousins so Carl Strauch was their uncle.. I have quite a bit of information from a Protz relative. The reason I was curious was that I knew my father had a sister and 2 brothers, but there was also information of a third brother--it turns out he died at 6 months age and Carl and Bertha also had a daughter who died the day of her birth.
RE: Morningstar cemetery I was helping a coworker with some family tree questions and several of her cousins sent pictures and info. She has since passed away and I'm afraid I have not kept in touch so I don't know who shared the picture and burial location.
