I was born and raised in the Wesley Chapel Community in Houston County. My father, Tommie Johnson is buried in Wesley Chapel. I still miss him. If you would like the leave him a flower, please do so. He was a wonderful man. My great-grandmother Anne Lightfoot,is buried in Widnes, England. She passed away not long after my Mother came to Texas.|
I am also the ggggrandaughter of Captain Samuel Harrison Bowen. Who lived when the Tea Party first sprang into action.
I really enjoy the history of Houston County, right now I am trying to get all the many stone gardens photographed in Houston County. Also I am a dedicated amatuer History Buff. I love The Houston County Museum, and I am also the Secretary of The Houston County Historical Commission. I am also along with several others, working on updating Houston County's Cemetery book, that was last published in 1987 by the Houston County Historical Commission. Anyone wishes to add their family members to the book, let me know, and we will be glad to add them.
"Nothing is ended until it is forgotten...."
I believe very strongly in cemetery preservation. Cemeteries in most cases are the only history of those that came before us. Like rare books in a library once it's lost it's lost forever.My only intention is to create a HISTORICAL RECORDING of those who are "Gone, but not Forgotten" before their tombstones are lost forever. This is copied from a fellow graver: "Get out and photograph memorials while they are still readable. This site is primarily for GRAVE photos not genealogy, preserve those memories that are quickly fading."
FROM THE FAQS:
How do I clean a headstone or grave marker?
Unless you are related to the interred on the headstone in question, DO NOT do anything to the headstone.
I am happy to share ANYTHING that I post. I have no crazy rules, My pictures are your pictures. Feel free to beg, borrow, steal with no intent to return. I take pictures of headstones out of kindness ... not for my ego or for the "numbers."
If anyone has any stories or information on any of my memorials, please let me know.Every person that has lived has a story to tell.I would like to know those stories. I think that every personshould have their life remembered.Anything at all is not to small, when it comes to a person's life.
THE RECORDING OF A CEMETERY
By Thelma Greene Reagan
Today we walked where others walked
On a lonely, windswept hill;
Today we talked where other cried
For Loved Ones whose lives are stilled.
Today our hearts were touched
By graves of tiny babies;
Snatched from the arms of loving kin,
In the heartbreak of the ages.
Today we saw where the grandparents lay
In the last sleep of their time;
Lying under the trees and clouds -
Their beds kissed by the sun and wind.
Today we wondered about an unmarked spot;
Who lies beneath this hollowed ground?
Was it a babe, child, young or old?
No indication could be found.
Today we saw where Mom and Dad lay.
We had been here once before
On a day we'd all like to forget,
But will remember forever more.
Today we recorded for kith and kin
The graves of ancestors past;
To be preserved for generations hence,
A record we hope will last.
Cherish it, my friend; preserve it, my friend,
For stones sometimes crumble to dust
And generations of folks yet to come
Will be grateful for your trust.
~~~IN GOD WE TRUST~~~
I was happy to do it. It was difficult to search due to the overgrowth of vegetation and fallen limbs. It appears some of the very nice monuments have been vandalized. The very large ones for the Haller's have all been pushed over. Also for the Moon's. I should have taken pictures of the damage while there, but I'll go back soon and take some.
Other area's I couldn't even get to because the cactus was quite large and so thick you can't walk through it.
I truly hope some organization will volunteer to clean this cemetery up. There are so many old headstones, it would be a shame to lose it.
You are very welcome. I had created a memorial for her a year ago & realized it was a duplicate when I went out to photograph today. I knew I had already been there, but the spelling is Connor on the headstone and that's what I had on the duplicate. I've deleted my duplicate and I think the photo turned out better today anyway. Just wanted to point out the spelling to you.
Almost too cold to be there this AM. This was the only Jacobs in the plot with a marker but there were Earl Dennis Hall & Sarah Grace Hall. I added Memorials and pictures. I am not related and will transfer if you want them.
They are all... Just Away.
What is the status of the Houston County's Cemetery book being published by the Houston County Historical Commission? My father's family was born and raised on Jones' Lane, down from the old school house so this is of great interest to me due to my family roots in and around Lovelady.
Thank You, I am OK. I am working on the Rawls family but having some trouble. I am not sure who all the Rawls buried in Wesley Chapel are and how they are related to each other. If you know, please e-mail me at: email@example.com
