Bio and Links
Bio Photo I have been researching some of the 36,000 + Army Air Forces personnel who died in the line of duty, of non-combat causes during the World War II era in service-related accidents. It is said that more
than 15,500 Army airmen were killed in airplane accidents between 1941 and 1946, within the borders of the U.S. and it's territories. They gave their all and died in the service of their country, but received no purple hearts and virtually no mention in the history books and have largely been forgotten by time.

For corrections, additions, or requests for transfer of memorial, please use the Edit tab, and select Suggest a Correction or Provide Additional Information to make any update requests. It is much easier to handle the issue this way, rather than a personal message.

I am happy to update any memorial, including family links. But I DO NOT like adding census information, copies of death certificates and please do not add long obituaries to the "photo" area. The information can be condensed and pasted into the bio area. If you don't have the time to type out the obituary, just email it to me. I will add it and give you credit for finding it.
I appreciate any information that can "round out" someone's bio.

T/Sgt. Steven J. Kovalich
Tim Cook,

I have recently been looking into my family's history and found that I am a cousin of T/Sgt. Steven J. Kovalich. I read the Cannon Crew Report about the fatal crash on 10/08/1944.

However, I currently do not have his discharge papers to learn more about his service. I am curious if you do as you noted he was: "Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 9 Oak Leaf Clusters for meritorious service (50 missions in the European theater) in World War II."

Thank you,

Dean C.

MSgt Oren Lee Sparks
MSgt Sparks died in an airplane crash in Bandera County, Texas, about September 4, 1943. He is buried at Fort Sam. I found him yesterday and was going to check your virtual cemeteries but forgot, then I saw your photo request today at Fort Sam and that reminded me. I don't know the circumstances of the crash but thought you might check it out.
