Bio and Links
Bio Photo I am a retired high school history teacher, having taught in the public schools of St. Mary's County, Maryland. I am a native of Huntington, Suffolk County, New York.

I have been interested in visiting old cemeteries since I was a child, when cemetery visiting was a family activity.

I began a project during the American Revolution Bicentennial to update the cemetery lists held by the St. Mary's County Historical Society, Leonardtown, MD. This project, using high school students, extended into the early 1980s. Some cemetery lists were published in the "Maryland-Delaware Genealogist."

I worked with the GenExchange Project adding cemetery data from both Long Island, New York, and Calvert and St. Mary's counties in Southern Maryland. I have also worked with the site.

I was editor of the "Generator," the quarterly publication of the St. Mary's County Genealogical Society from 1994 to 2014, except for one year. I also served as 2nd Vice President of that organization.

Currently, I'm a member of the Sgt. James H. Harris Camp #38, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. We are now in a project to identify & mark graves of the known Union soldiers in St. Mary's & Calvert counties.

Locating a grave
Would you know how I can find Plot 69? I have the architect's drawings of the stone corners with chains, etc. but no map of the cemetery plot locations. Thanks for any help you may be able to offer.

RE: Oliver Brown
Hello David,

The 1845 death year was a typo and should have been 1815. I believe we have the same person here. Oliver Brown was the son of Daniel Brown, Patriot, and Sarah Lounsbury of Greenwich,CT/North Castle, NY.

Hi David,

Oliver Brown's death is recorded in the Finch Family bible of Jonathan Finch, Jr. born 10 Nov 1772 in Greenwich, CT/North Castle, NY. Jonathan Finch married Sarah Brown who was Oliver Brown's niece.

His death in the Bible is recorded as " 30 Oct 1845 age 45 years."

Are you able to procure a picture of Oliver's gravestone?

Tradition states that the Finch's and the Brown's were born in Greenwich, however, the Finch family and allies tended to hover around the border as their land was in the Banksville and Round Hill neighborhoods of Greenwich. Therefore they may have been born either in Greenwich or North Castle, yet neither town has their births recorded. They are all buried in the Middle Patent Rural Cemetery in North Castle, NY.

I believe he was born in Greenwich and died in Huntington. Is there a way you could help me procure a copy or certified copy of his marriage record and death record in Huntington? I would like to view any vital statistics information that those records may have.

Thank you!

RE: Melville W. Spencer
I don't have anymore now but if I find any, I will send an edit. He was my 2nd cousin but I didn't know him or her.

His mother was my first cousin 1X removed. I knew she existed but had no idea where she was, who she married, or if she had children. I just recently discovered information about her. That is how I found Melville.

Thank you!

RE: Confused
First, thank you for all your work posting the cemetery information.

I looked again at the cemetery info and it seems you are correct about the parents. I can't find my original message to see my error. I did notice Theodore's death year should be 1923.
Thank you.
