I am an amateur military historian and genealogist. I am interested in researching the burial locations of U.S. military service men and women, particularly at Arlington National Cemetery in Fort Myer, Virginia, and the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, Maryland.|
I am also researching my family tree, particularly the Shewan family members who originated in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and their descendents throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
My Scots great-grandfather, William J. Shewan (1867 - 1947) and his son, my grandfather, William W. Shewan (1895 - 1973) arrived at Ellis Island on July 2, 1911 and settled in Erie, Pennsylvania.
In addition to my paternal line, I am researching other family lines, including:
* Akre (originally Aakre in Norwegian)
Other cemeteries of interest:
* Air Force Academy Cemetery, Colorado Springs, CO
* Barrancas Nat'l Cemetery, Pensacola, FL
* Congressional Cemetery, Washington, DC
* Fort Rosecrans Nat'l Cemetery, San Diego, CA
* Golden Gate Nat'l Cemetery, San Francisco, CA
* Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA
* Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington, DC
* Quantico Nat'l Cemetery, Triangle, VA
* Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington DC
* Soldiers' Nat'l Cemetery, Washington, DC
* West Point Cemetery, West Point, NY
Some of my photo contributions can be seen here.
To all the Find A Grave photo volunteers who have been kind enough to take photos of my family's gravestones at my request over the past year, I thank you most gratefully for your time and effort. With graves throughout the United States, the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, it would not be feasible for me to visit them all and take my own photos. I am extremely grateful to Find A Grave, and to the photo volunteers, for helping me to research my family.
I give my permission to use any of my photos, providing 1) it is not for commercial use, and 2) attribution is given.

|Mike Ritchie||RE: Shewan Family|
We corresponded almost exactly a year ago regarding the Shewan Family. I am descended from a Shewan family in Longside, Aberdeenshire.
As you have noticed I have recently added two Shewan memorials, one at Keith-hall and the other at St Peter's cemetery in Aberdeen. With regard to the latter, there are more Shewans in that cemetery but it is quite large and I still having to finish adding the photos which I have.

I believe you can now add John R. Shewan to Find A Grave his wife Shirley J Walter Shewan is memorial no. 104519503 I have a date of death for John as Nov 21, 2013 from social security death notice on ancestry.com I am related to Shirley through the Walter lines.

I noticed that you provided a picture for Lt. General George Franklin Good Jr. I am trying to find his family. I found some personal possessions in his wifes parents friends attic that belong to them. Lots of pictures of his wife Jessie Garrison as a girl growing up on academy grounds during the teens etc..
|Kelly Perazzolo||Jane Shewan at Sydeham Cemetery (Christchurch, NZ)|
I was at her burial location yesterday - her grave is unmarked (strip of grass).
I haven't been able to find exactly her plot but I took this photo of the block - most of them are unmarked. (Photo taken at 43°33'31.1"S 172°37'28.5"E). She is the only Shewan buried in the Christchurch City Council area.
She doesn't appear on the NZ Death Index however there's a grave in Timaru, NZ with the inscription Jane Shawan 1844 - 1909 and while there are 2 people buried in this plot she isn't one of them. The date of death is the same - Aug 14, 1909.
I think I know what happened here - most of the people who are buried in this Block were patients who died at Sunnyside Hospital (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunnyside_Hospital) so I believe she was a patient there at the time of her death and possibly that the hospital wasn't aware that her husband was buried in Timaru so she was buried by herself in the local cemetery.
I hope this makes sense.
She and her husband James had the following children
Catherine (Born April 1875)
William Shewan (Born 1878)
John Shewan (Born 1882)
Henry Shewan (1886 - 1938) (Buried in the Timaru plot)
Have also found the following death notice in the local newspaper, dated February 1897
"SHEWAN. At the Timaru Hospital, on February 28th, Christina, the beloved daughter of James and Jane Shewan, aged 24 years. Deeply regretted. "
"SHEWAN - The friends of James and Jane Shewan, are respectfully informed that the funeral of their late daughter, Christina, will leave their residence, High Street, Tomorrow, (Sunday) February 28th, at 2.30pm for the cemetery. "
Christina would have been born in abt 1873, before they arrived in NZ, hence why she isn't showing up on the NZ Birth Index. She is buried in a plot next to her brother and father. She is also buried with W.Shewan (Her brother?)
At first glance there are many Shewan's buried in Timaru
I hope this helps.

No problem Gerald, happy to help.

I see on your photo request for Graham Shewan in the Shands Road Cemetery you requested info on other Shewan's that may be near by.
You will find some more with these webpages:
And you may also find this website useful.
I am very excited to see that you found the graves of the Stormo patriarch and matriarch. My line leads to Helmer, and my inability to link the family because I could not find Hemming and Berit was driving me crazy. Well done, sir.
One or two of his children were transferred to me by photo volunteers. I will transfer them to you, except for Helmer. There's a very interesting connection with this branch of the family and I hope to have a meeting this summer with ones whose lives they touched.

Hello, I actioned your photo request today for Gladys Shewan. You asked to be notified if any other Shewans were in the same cemetery. There are 5 altogether. Gladys's ashes lie next to those of her husband Robert. His photo is included on Gladys's memorial page. There are 3 others that I have photos for:
Hannah Maude (wife of above)
Let me know if you want me to email them to you.
|Paula Campbell||Robert Leslie Shewan|
I found an IOOF pendant belonging to Robert Leslie Shewan dated June 30, 1932.
I know that Robert Leslie died in 1974 and his wife died in 1991; they had no children.
I would like to return the pendant to a family member.
I live in Vancouver, Canada.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
