I am working on a virtual cemetery of all the men who served in the 16th Regiment Georgia Infantry Volunteers (all 10 companies) as part of the research for a book I plan to publish. So far, I have located and/or created and linked memorials for 775 of the men who served in the 16th GVI. Of those, only 65 are ones I have created for men who did not already have one. Only 8 of the created ones remain with unknown burial locations.

My connection to the 16th is through my husband. His gg grandfather William Walker Fitts (Find A Grave Memorial# 47068331) served in Company D "Danielsville Guards" and was killed at the Bloody Angle during the Battle of Spotsylvania.

It seems that the places where the 16th Regiment fought were always the places that saw the heaviest casualties and the worst engagements. It is very moving to follow along the footsteps of the Regiment and see the places in person. We have stood in the Wheatfield and the Peach Orchard at Gettysburg; the Sunken Road at Fredericksburg; the Bloody Lane at Antietam; and saw Cramptons Gap where 500 Confederates (including the 16th Georgia) tried to defend against the approach of 13,000 union soldiers.

At Spotsylvania where my husbands gg grandfather was killed, we were able to hire a knowledgeable guide who was able to research and then show us almost precisely where the 16th GA was at the Bloody Angle and where WW Fitts died. He is not in the Confederate Cemetery and his burial is unknown. Since many of the dead were left in the trenches and the ground turned over them, we assume this was his fate.

To honor the memory of these men, I am systematically searching through every name on the roster, cross checking through Fold3 records, and trying to locate them on Find A Grave, then linking them in a virtual cemetery so they can be found together. For the many who were killed in action at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and elsewhere who do not have a grave, I am creating memorials with their information and listing their burials as unknown. So far I have located and linked 775 memorials for the 16th GA Inf Vols.

Since little compiled information is currently available about the 16th I am also planning to publish a book. If you have additional information about its members, I would be happy to include biographical info, stories, letters, etc. Please feel free to message me with any additional info or for more info I may have on a relative.
