Why Find A Grave? The Find A Grave website pulled me in for a number of reasons. I started contributing to Find A Grave as an extension of my own family history research, which I've dabbled in (sometimes obsessively) for years. Photography is also one of my favorite hobbies, and unlike birds, gravestones hold still! Finally, I work in the tech industry, and this very successful example of crowd-sourcing intrigued me. |
My Family History: Surnames include Meier, Cummings, Krech, Taute, and Connolly. I have ancestors from Varel, Oestfriesland; Fambach, Thuringia, Germany; Camus, County Galway, Ireland; Skorped, Vaternorrlands, Sweden; and Essex Co, England, among others. They primarily immigrated to the midwest – Iowa and Minnesota. Oftentimes, memorials I create are not part of my own family tree. A virtual cemetery shows my direct ancestors, and early on I started leaving lilies of the valley on memorials for those in my family tree, friends and other personal connections.
Photography: When I photograph gravestones, I try to capture images that not only provide a clear view of the engraving, but also let the viewer have a feel for the location around the grave site. I favor a low-angle perspective (which has an added benefit of being a great workout for the quads). That said, I take plenty of not-so-good pictures. Sometimes I still post them since a crummy picture is better than none, and someone else can always add a better one. Feel free to use the pictures I've posted. Acknowledgement of where found and who posted them is appreciated.
Local History: Local history is another of my interests, and I'm on the board of the Chisago County Historical Society in east central Minnesota. CCHS has an on-going project, led by Robert Chudek, to research and document the 42 cemeteries in this county. All of the Chisago County cemeteries are in Find A Grave with gate photos, GPS coordinates, and pre-1995 interment records uploaded. Volunteers contribute photographs, family research, obituary transcriptions, and more recent burials. We also work with local churches and cemeteries to offer workshops and digitize records. Contact me if you want to get connected with this project.
Thank you to all those preserving and sharing history by photographing and publishing on Find A Grave!
Please submit corrections, updates or transfer requests using the "Send A Correction" feature located under the EDIT tab on each memorial.

Just a quick note to mention that your third photo - the establishing shot of her place in the cemetery - is stunning. The lighting, the fields in the background - it is something special.
Hey Darcy can you transfer our gr gr grandfather Kloyda to me ?
Thanks Nancy #46575753
|Grave Walker||adolf craig|
I was wondering, are you related to the adolf craig family? 60695166 is his memorial number.

#59946440 - has a photo of Caroline Rhyme Heller' individual marker.
The family plot/marker on this memorial is correct. I have uploaded the correct individual marker, so if you delete yours it will be up to date.
Caroline Rhyme Heller's memorial does contain the correct photos.
|Anonymous||duplicate - correction|
The duplicate photo was more readable - was the reason for the note. Disregard if you wish.
|Anonymous||RE: Duplicate memorial|
I know yours in the original but since theirs has a photo, it seemed easier to delete yours than to try to get them to move the photo and then delete theirs.
If there were no photo, I would have sent the note to the other guy.
I have posted about 40 cemeteries to findagrave.com but since findagrave is now owned by ancestry I do not plan to add any more cemeteries to this website. As of today, Sept. 29, 2014
I have notified findagrave that I don't want to do updates anymore. They can tend to it.
Feel free to use any photo's I have posted.
Any information found online should be verified. People DO post incorrect information sometimes. Clicking to Accept changes and add new info is faster and easier but it doesn't add who provided that info when added to a memorial so I feel that a lot of misinformation can be added and no one will know who added it.
Also, if it's correct no one will be able to contact the person that added it.
I am not related to most entries I have made.
To all my "friends" it has been a pleasure meeting you.

Thankyou Darcy for all your wonderful work on this sight on behalf of the Cummings family. I went on the sight intending to volunteer to do it and that part is all done. Now I just need to enter my parents, my fraternal grandmother and I will try to do the rest of the Cummings graves in the Cummings section. I cannot remember if you have a copy of the Cummings Connection that my sister and I published. We still have some copies which I would be glad to give you one.

I saw the photo you had of my Great Grandfather Herbert Nelson, and was wondering where that photo came from? There are very few photos of the Nelson side of the family, mainly due to the fact that there were 3 generations of single male children. I would certainly be interested in knowing some more!
Thanks in advance,
|Couple of Gravers||RE: Holland Cemetery|
You are welcome Darcy. The lighting was really good that day.
