I served in Vietnam with a Marine rifle company, Delta Co., 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, in the latter part of 1968 until I was wounded in a firefight.|
I was sent back to the states for medical treatments of my wounds at the Naval Hospital in Camp Pendleton, California. In between the visit to the hospital, I was an instructor training Marines going over to Vietnam for a thirteen month tour. I knew how important it was to do my best to train these men from my experiences how to survive their deployment. Deep inside I also knew some of them will not come back no matter how hard I tried.
After I was discharged, reading about the rising casualties in Vietnam, I regretted I couldn't have done more. Few years later I saw the movie "Garden of Stones" about the Army's Old Guard burying soldiers killed in Vietnam. In the movie a sergeant with a similar job as mine explain to his girl friend how he felt with the task of such futility. He said, "If your house is burning and you can't save all your children, you do what you can and cry about the rest later". That is why I'm here on behalf of all combat training instructors; to cry for and honor the ones we couldn't save.

You have placed a picture of him on the site. I would like to use it in my Husbands family tree. This was his first cousin; may I use it for our personal tree?

I want to "Thank You" so very much for sharing Rojelio Bocanegra's photo with us. I have been searching online hoping to get at least a High School photograph of this wonderful hero. I knew Rojelio as a child in Cystal City. He was my brother's friend and would visit our house often. His father Erasmo was my Godfather, and our families were good friends. My family left Crystal City in 1954, but came and visited the
Bocanegra family in 1956. That was the last time I saw Rojelio and his family. When we heard about his death my parents were devastated. I called his parents and talked to his mother Maria, and its a conversation that I will never forget. I wish that I had know Rojelio better, all I know is that he came from a wonderful and very loving family.

I am writing about the photograph you posted on Memorial #12796191 for Richard Ray Henling. It looks like a photo from a Marine Corps Recruit Training album. Did you know Richard? Do you know which Platoon he graduated with? Richard enlisted as part of Platoon 145 - The Arizona Platoon - on 29 Jun 1965, however he did not graduate with us, being transferred to another platoon before we graduated. I believe he served with 3rd Recon in Viet Nam. I served with 1st Recon, 1966-1967. Anything you can share with me will be appreciated. Thank you for your service, my fellow Marine. Semper Fi.

I was wondering if you were aware you have the identical photo of this man on his memorial twice. It looks like perhaps you hit it twice inadvertently. Memorial #118118092

Thanks for posting Davids' picture on this website. The picture was one I posted on the Virtual Wall a few years ago. David and I were best friends. I visit his grave site 2 or 3 times a year when I am in Oregon.
