Bio and Links
Bio Photo I am a retired high school history teacher, having taught in the public schools of St. Mary's County, Maryland. I am a native of Huntington, Suffolk County, New York.

I have been interested in visiting old cemeteries since I was a child, when cemetery visiting was a family activity.

I began a project during the American Revolution Bicentennial to update the cemetery lists held by the St. Mary's County Historical Society, Leonardtown, MD. This project, using high school students, extended into the early 1980s. Some cemetery lists were published in the "Maryland-Delaware Genealogist."

I worked with the GenExchange Project adding cemetery data from both Long Island, New York, and Calvert and St. Mary's counties in Southern Maryland. I have also worked with the site.

I was editor of the "Generator," the quarterly publication of the St. Mary's County Genealogical Society from 1994 to 2014, except for one year. I also served as 2nd Vice President of that organization.

Currently, I'm a member of the Sgt. James H. Harris Camp #38, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. We are now in a project to identify & mark graves of the known Union soldiers in St. Mary's & Calvert counties.

Do you have reference to prove that Oliver Brown was born in Huntington? His death entry is in the Finch Family Bible of Jonathan Finch who married Sarah Brown, Oliver's sister. They family was a Greenwich, CT family. The death date in the Bible matches your memorial. Thank you.

If Cathy is not a member of your family I would really appreciate having her transferred to me. We went to school together and I have set up a virtual memorial for some of our classmates. Thanks for your consideration.

Howard Family of Leonardtown, MD
David – What an amazing amount of work and wealth of information! I am hoping you may be able to assist me in my search for my great (x’s 4) grandfather’s family. Stephen Howard lived with his family in St. Mary’s County, Leonardtown, MD. In 1776 he enlisted in the 1st Maryland Regiment, and in 1780 was wounded at the Battle of Camden, then taken prisoner and held aboard the prison ship “Elizabeth", then pressed into service on a man-of-war and taken to Kingston, Jamaica. Later he was sent to Canada, then onto Fort Loyal, on Dutchman’s Point in North Hero, VT (the last fort the British held onto in the U.S.) where after 16 years held as a prisoner of war, he was finally able to escape to freedom. I have been trying to find who his parents were and how they came to be in Maryland, (did they arrive on the Ark or the Dove?) Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Earl Francis Hofmann
Thank you so much for the correction. I wish I had more ancestors to connect with him. This is one of the few of the ancestors from Baltimore Maryland that have appeared in Find a Grave. I'm so grateful for it too. If I find more, I'll let you know. Thanks.

Earl Francis Hofmann
Hi, Can you please correct the spelling of Earl Francis Hofmann's memorial. #21598832 You have it spelled Hoffman and his correct spelling is Hofmann, with only one F in Hofmann. Thanks a million.
