Bio and Links
Bio Photo For as long as I can remember, I've been fascinated with pioneer cemeteries. That fascination as a young child turned to reverence as I began to see in these old stones something more than just names. Each stone, whether marble or wood, weathered or polished, the names clear or undecipherable, symbolize the life and legacy of the person buried beneath it. Each person was important in his or her own right, and their passing signified a life-changing event for those loved ones who gathered with swollen and tear-filled eyes around the grave to say one last goodbye. Yet not all was lost with the passing of these individuals for, more often than not, they left behind direct descendants to not only continue the family blood line, but to carry on the memory of those who were lost but not easily forgotten.

When my father passed away in 2010, I found comfort in these old cemeteries once again. No longer was it just the pioneer cemeteries that brought me comfort but the newer ones as well. Walking through a cemetery reminds you that this is the circle of life...men are born, they live their lives and during that time hopefully find and give love and compassion to others, then they pass away. Cemeteries are not a thing to be feared or thought of with sadness. Rather, they are to be valued and protected for they hold the souls of those we love so deeply. It is our responsibility to protect the memories of these individuals, whether they passed away yesterday or more than a hundred years ago.

Byron G. Smith, Ione Cemetery, #72023042
Hi! I know the marker was difficult to read, but I do have one small correction: Byron's middle initial was C, for Charles. (He was my stepfather once.) Just an FYI. Thanks.

Dierks Family:
Christine,

I have added a few more names to the Smith Mountain Cemetery, members of the Dierks Family. My Great grandfather by marriage was Walter Wesley Dierks. I have linked Cordy and Walter with their parents, Herman and Caroline Dierks. Could you link Harvey to this family also? I used to live in the Cutler area, moved East in 1967.

Thanks,
