Bio Photo Are you a genealogy addict ? Ask me about joining GoClub-Belmont County, a private social networking site where members share info. and photos regarding Belmont Co. genealogy.

Website: www.belmontcountyohio.net

I'm also looking for volunteers to help add names to Belmont County cemeteries.

My brother "Skip" and I enjoy genealogy. He's my expert regarding Belmont county, OH. We both take photos of tombstones, especially of family members. Some of the surnames are Bain, Bane, Blaine, Budd, Curtis, Giffen, Giffin, Griffith, Haines, Hepburn, Hinkle, Keyser, Long, Milligan, Pond, Spears, Shahan, and Terrill.

I started using the FAG app on my iPhone to photograph tombstones and simultaneously record their gps location. It's so easy. I enjoy using it.

UPDATE: Skip started a GIFFEN DNA Group.

In addition to Belmont county, OH, we explore Ohio and Brooke counties in WV. I travel between Belmont Co and Columbus, OH. So, I make a few stops along the way, such as Cambridge or Zanesville.

I look for family tombstones across the country and try to link them back to Belmont Co., OH, Ohio Co., WV, and PA.

I have several GIFFEN / GIFFIN family trees at ancestry.com. There's my Giffen family which started with Robert and Mary (Bane) Giffen. Plus a family tree for the Andrew Giffin family. I recently started a Simon Giffin tree.

My ancestry.com tree name is "Terry Magyar"

More recently, I've added family trees for Giffens/Giffins in the following Ohio counties; Athens, Butler, Coshocton, Licking, Miami & Hamilton, and Ross County. Many of these Scotch-Irish lines can be followed back to the late 1700s, in Penn.

I presently live in Franklin Co., OH, but grew up in Belmont Co., OH.

Please contact me (use the EDIT function) if need an item corrected of if you have additional information regarding any of the these families.

I highly recommend the Cumberland Trail Genealogical Society's book "Your Guide to Belmont Co. Cemeteries". ($20 + shipping)

The Brocks
Terry - just read your bio. Do you have any information on the Brocks? My 5th great grandfather/mother were Benjamin Brock & Sarah Sanderson. I have located their probate records and they died in Flushing area but haven't located their graves. I have located my 4th Great Grandparents (Jesse and Mary Brock). Their son George Washington Brock and Nancy Haines were my 3rd Great Grandparents.

Any information you might have on them would be appreciated. Jesse had 3 sons and left two homes on acreage to them somewhere on Reservoir Hill Rd. I'm hoping to find it and see if there are any ruins left. I'm working with St. Clairsville on trying to find exactly where the land is located. I know one section is where Console Energy is located.

George Sanderson Brock (one of Benjamin's sons) built a home on Holloway Rd. There is a picture of it that indicates that M.D. Morris lived in it and it was still standing in 2009.

Other relatives from the area are Kirk, Pickering, Morris, Butcher, Carpenter.

Sorry for going on, but wanted to give you as much information as possible ...

RE: Methodist, aka: Windy Point
Hello Terry - I took this project on because I was looking for my ancestors. When I talked to the town office, they said they did not keep any records on the interments. It is a nice cemetery, but they don't take much care when mowing, etc. I've noticed several stones that were moved, hit, broken in between times I've been there. I'm usually in a little hurry when I go down there, it's a 2-1/2 hour drive so I'm glad that the pictures have come out as well as they have. I use a Cannon Power Shot since it's small and easy to use.

I did locate a couple documents that had been completed by a genealogy group that walked the cemetery reading the headstones and assigning the Lot numbers. I'm comparing everything and hope to determine where people are located.

Thank you for your updates. Any information/corrections are appreciated. There are several cemeteries in the area, but don't know if I'll take them on like this one, but you never know. :-)

Griffith - MD to Pickaway Co, OH
Hoping you might know something to connect this great-great-grandmother of mine. I know little and hoping to know more about the GRIFFITH connection who began in MD, county unknown. Hoping to find out the name of Eliza's parents and/or siblings. I have searched through all of the cemeteries in Pickaway, Perry and Muskingum counties hoping to find a Griffith connection, but have not found anything to connect. Perhaps you know of Griffith connections that might be related.

RE: Thanks
Hi, Terry! It would be wonderful to have you transfer me all the graves associated with the Paine Cemetery were Jonathan and his father William are buried. They are all family members and I have relationships who are cousins of mine that I keep in touch with. Lynn Welniak, redwood12114 @gmail.com.
