I have been interested in family history since the mid-1970's and interested in cemeteries since childhood when we often walked to Lewis Cem a small rural cemetery where we read the stones, told ghost stories and noted the tragedy of infant mortality.|
Much research has been done on my Gerrish family since they were an early New England family arriving in Newbury MA in 1639. But much less is known of my mother's family so at this time I am more interested in learning about her Small, Holton, Ramsay, Ogle, and Light families, the first 2 in PA and the others in Canada, Scotland and Ireland.
Besides my own family I am deeply involved in research of the small rural cemeteries of Carrigan Twp, Marion Co, IL: Lewis, Harrison (where approximately 70% of the burials have some connection to my 3x-Great Grandfather, Henry Gerrish), Phelps and Wisher (listed here as Burton/Kissner/Wisher).
Any new information to add to the memorials I have created as well as infomation on my own lines is greatly appreciated.
Though my ratio of managed memorials to created memorials is high, I AM NOT a hoarder aka number person. Most of my memorials which I did not create came from the accounts of deceased or inactive contributors. If I have no connection whatever to a memorial that I manage I am always happy to find someone who would like to take it over. And I am just as happy to receive any and all that have a connection with my extended family.

Thanks for catching that the date of death was wrong. I went back and checked the book and the date is wrong in the book. I have found several errors in the book, but somethings I have no way of verifying unless there is a picture.

re: Memorial# 57869231
Walnut Hill Cemetery
you asked: "Was West Newbury once known as Byfield?"
In the beginning there was only parent-town of Newbury. Byfield has always been a parish [village] within the town limits of Newbury proper. Eventually Newburyport set off [in 1764] to become a separate town [now a city]. In 1819, West Newbury section of Newbury broke away from the parent town and for it's first year it was called: Putnam. A year later the name was changed to West Newbury . Newbury, Newburyport and West Newbury are completely separate towns now.
Byfield is a village within Newbury and has never broken away from the parent town of Newbury. I believe Byfield has always been quite autonomous however as it is situated in the far western portion of Newbury not close to the coast. Byfield is located just south of the separate town of West Newbury. Old Byfield Cemetery is in the Byfield Section of Newbury [a church stands in the middle of the cemetery], while just across the street from it sits New Byfield Cemetery which is actually in Georgetown, Mass. just across the town border. This cluster of towns and villages is one of the most beautiful areas of Massachusetts.
Do you know if this Joseph Gerrish is the Joseph who married Mary Little and was the son of Col Moses Gerrish of Newbury?:
I'm sorry but I have not researched this family at all. I know little about the genealogy of the folks resting at Walnut Hill Cemetery. There were so many people with the same name back at that time. I understand how difficult it can be to match the correct people on the tree.

Wow...major brain clog. Yes, he is buried at Drummer Township Cemetery along with his wife and others. His parents are buried at Beekman Cemetery out side Fisher, Il. Why I also put them at the Champaign cemetery is unknown. My original photos and descriptions are correct. I have deleted the pair in Champaign. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Great, thanks. No I don't directly but my Allegheny Twp families and Warren County families kept marrying into Flemings and Copelands. Thanks!

Many thanks for the additional data you sent which is now added and linked! Best wishes on your VanMeter line.
Those are very hard to catch when two last names are involved.
