Bio and Links
Bio Photo I am a retired History teacher. I am working on connecting & linking the Metcalf descendants of the three Metcalf brothers who settled in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee in the 1790's. My grandparents & great grandparents & great great grandparents are buried in Madison County along with many Uncles & Aunts & Cousins. As you know many families were large in the 1800's. The same is true with the Metcalfs & Corns & Lisenbees which lived in Madison County in the 1800's.

James Henry Metcalf
I have been been tearing my hair out trying to find James Henry Metcalf..or at least the one I was looking for. Finally!

My mother had sent me a letter many years ago tying me to the Metcalf name by "surprise". At first I didn't do too much about chasing down the tree but recently got interested again. and do I have a few stories to tell.

You all probably know that we have a bit of Cherokee blood in us but that's not unusual, lol. When white man first came here there weren't very many white women around. So the Indians were quite willing to sell theirs.

Anyway, I was the only one who knew of this connection and my siblings didn't believe me when I told them. It was indeed hard to find out who my grandfather was because he was illegitimate and used his mother's last name. I had no clue until the letter. Now I finally know through all the twists and turns that James Henry Metcalf is my great-grandfather.

I have a great deal of info on my mother's side and will be the first to combine the "two" families.

We should all collaborate as I have tried to be very accurate and try to verify my sources with credible data. Its a hard task, and I noticed that some people have posted erroneous info on some sites I have run across. I am afraid of ding the same. It was a relief to find James Henry as I was beginning to think he didn't exist!

I don't know who I am though..Metcalf, or Justice?
I guess it doesn't matter. Can anyone really list all their family names?

RE: David Vance Ledford
You are quite welcome. I knew something was wrong when I saw the obituary. Just took a picture of their stone yesterday.
You may be connected to my wife's family. I've noticed you have some of the memorials for the same people that I am researching; Ledford's, Scott's etc. I have also seen some of those great photos that you have been attaching to some of those memorials. I am glad that you created the one's that I've seen, before that monster Elizabeth stole them. She has never been to Yancey or Mitchell County, but her greed has swallowed up an awful lot of memorials for our local folk; it's good to know you.

You're welcome. I can't tell you how much you have helped me. I'm doing well. I am off work this Friday and I may find time to go to the courthouse for a few minutes.
