I'm also looking for volunteers to help add names to Belmont County cemeteries.

My brother "Skip" and I enjoy genealogy. He's my expert regarding Belmont county, OH. We both take photos of tombstones, especially of family members. Some of the surnames are Bain, Bane, Blaine, Budd, Curtis, Giffen, Giffin, Griffith, Haines, Hepburn, Hinkle, Keyser, Long, Milligan, Pond, Spears, Shahan, and Terrill.

I started using the FAG app on my iPhone to photograph tombstones and simultaneously record their gps location. It's so easy. I enjoy using it.

UPDATE: Skip started a GIFFEN DNA Group.

In addition to Belmont county, OH, we explore Ohio and Brooke counties in WV. I travel between Belmont Co and Columbus, OH. So, I make a few stops along the way, such as Cambridge or Zanesville.

I look for family tombstones across the country and try to link them back to Belmont Co., OH, Ohio Co., WV, and PA.

I have several GIFFEN / GIFFIN family trees at There's my Giffen family which started with Robert and Mary (Bane) Giffen. Plus a family tree for the Andrew Giffin family. I recently started a Simon Giffin tree.

My tree name is "Terry Magyar"

More recently, I've added family trees for Giffens/Giffins in the following Ohio counties; Athens, Butler, Coshocton, Licking, Miami & Hamilton, and Ross County. Many of these Scotch-Irish lines can be followed back to the late 1700s, in Penn.

I presently live in Franklin Co., OH, but grew up in Belmont Co., OH.

Please contact me (use the EDIT function) if need an item corrected of if you have additional information regarding any of the these families.

I highly recommend the Cumberland Trail Genealogical Society's book "Your Guide to Belmont Co. Cemeteries". ($20 + shipping)

Jesse Cordner

I just posted a picture of what I believe is Jesse Cordner's headstone. It is next to Elizabeth and John Cordner.

Sarah Donley Sells
Have been taking photos of Sells for genieresearcher. The lot where John & Harry Sells are buried has 4 corner markers. Across the back of the lot, left to right, are Father, Mother, Earl, John & Charles. John's stone is quite large but the other 3 sides are blank. I think "Mother" is prob Sarah & "Father" her husband. Didn't know if you would want this photo posted or not. The stone with Mother on it has sunk into the ground & is leaning forward. I tried to move it but it wouldn't budge.

John L Giffin
Hi Terry, John Giffin is my Great great great grandfather. He and his first wife Phobe Spears had a daughter Martha Frances Giffin. My mom might have some notes about this but I think Phobe may have died during childbirth. We have some pictures of Martha Frances and one of John Giffin. We never knew he was a civil war veteran. Our next trip to New Straitsville we will visit his grave. Martha Frances and her husband William Spencer are buried at the Dawley-Downhour Cemetery that we visited in August. Cheryl

William Craig
There is a Rev War Pension application for a Wm Craig who resided in Belmont Co OH. He was a very young soldier in the Rev War. This Wm was born in MD according to the Pension Application. It's worth researching for Craig or Craige family of Belmont Co.

Deborah Ambler

Re: Find A Grave Memorial# 145900459

Is it possible that the inscription of this tombstone, which looks quite worn, has been misread when it is recorded as saying " her 2nd yr..."? The 1860 census (3 Aug 1860) of William T and Deborah Ambler's family in Mead Township shows a 2 year old Deborah (implied birth year of 1858). This Deborah does not appear in the 1870 census of the family, implying that she died between 1860 and 1870. If she died in 1865 as noted in this memorial, then she would have been 7 not 2. It is unclear to me if the 1865 date is from the grave marker or not since its not readable in the photo - looks like it barely would be on site.

Pat Donovan
Dear Terry, Thanks so very much for adding this info to US Find a Grave. Please note the following correction: Margaret Irene “Maggie” DONOVAN NEITZELT is my husband’s great-aunt. Her father was Michael DONOVAN (not WAROVAN) and her mother was Sarah Elizabeth STOUTENHOWER. She was married to Newton NEITZELT. I know how hard it is to decipher those old records. We are always anxious to hear from anyone who can add to our knowledge about the DONOVAN family.

RE: Wilson Monroe Giffin
You might want to check out my Knox County (OH) Families database on RootsWeb. I have about 80 Giffin/Giffen people shown there. This is a work in progress, with additions and corrections added at least 4 times a year, so you might check back occasionally.
