Hi. St Andrews Church, which no longer exists, was in what is now called Wakapuaka. Do you have a copy of the 'Walk Nelson' folder/brochure which contains maps and directions for several walks around Nelson? Both the Hira church (with cemetery) and the St Andrews churchyard are marked on walk number 20 (Teal Valley and Country Churchyards). You can get this folder from the council offices. On my copy, access to St Andrews Churchyard is described as being from '...the second driveway on the left after the Wakapuaka Tennis Courts and before the Glen turn off...' This is driving into Nelson from Hira on SH6. Obviously, if you are driving out of Nelson going north then the access road will be on your right. I have never been there but I think this access road is the one with the mail boxes marked for 422 Wakapuaka Road.
The Hira cemetery is a short distance before the Cable Bay turnoff on the left as you drive out of Nelson on SH6. As you come towards the Cable Bay turnoff you will see a sign that reads '...Cable Bay; Happy Valley Skywire; Turn left 200m...' Immediately after this sign pull off the road to the left. You will see the cemetery gates and an area of grass where you can park up.
Do you know of or refer to the Nelson Council/Tasman Council maps available on the website? - http://www.topofthesouthmaps.co.nz/
If you do, are you aware that many of the cemeteries are marked as overlays on the maps? In some cases just the location of the cemetery is shown but for others the blocks, rows and plots are shown. For St Andrews just the location is shown, but, for example, for both Hira and Motueka the cemetery layout is shown in great detail. When you pull up the map on the website, you tick the box to the left marked 'Recreation' and then tick all the boxes related to cemeteries. Go to the area on the map where you believe the cemetery is located and enlarge the area until you see the exact location for the cemetery. Keep enlarging and you will start to see labelled blocks and rows.
Let me know if any of that doesn't make sense and I'll try to clarify further. :-)

|Jim||Gaukrodger St Johns, Wakefield|
Hi, I am researching my soon to be in-laws ancestors and have discovered 4 Gaukrodger burials mentioned in St John's Wakefield cemetery.
I believe that William Gaukrodger (d 1892) and Elizabeth Ann Gaukrodger (d 1880) are in the same grave and are Mother and son.
Then in a second grave is Charles Gaukrodger (d 1864) and Mary Gaukrodger (d 1893).
Would love photos and or details of the exact headstone wording as it might help with relationships on Ancestry. Unfortunately I have no idea where in the graveyard they might be and of course understand the headstone might be illegible.
Any help much appreciated. If I'd been doing this in 2011 I would have visited myself as passed through Nelson during a 3 month trip :-)

Hi, Amelia is in plot 59 block 5; the cemetery map shows this plot as occupied by Emily Davies. This in incorrect and you will see that Emily is shown again on the map as occupying plot 67, which is correct. Unfortunately there is no headstone for Amelia; she is next to/to the right of a joint headstone for Eunice and Veryl (who are to the right of Albert and Blanche)and within the same multiple plot (two to the left) of Owen John. I have a picture which I was going to send to you but you don't seem to have an email address listed on your profile. Happy to send it to you if you wish or upload it to the memorial - whatever you prefer, Jonty
