Bio and Links
Bio Photo Jan Bos is a police officer in his hometown Nijmegen in Holland. He is an amateur World War Two historian to the 82nd Airborne Division and Troop Carriers. The 82nd liberated Nijmegen during the so-called operation Market Garden, starting 17 September 1944. The paratroopers and glidermen from the 82nd Airborne Division could not do their job without the support of the crewmembers of the Troop Carrier transport planes, dropping the paratroopers and towing the CG-4A Waco gliders.

Am a member of the Historical Section of the National Liberation Museum in Groesbeek, Holland. Working on temporary American cemeteries in North Africa and Europe. Am also a member of the Groesbeek Airborne Friends.

Have adopted several graves at Margraten (Holland) and Henri Chapelle (Belgium) Cemeteries.

I have witten a book about the 376th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division.

Currently doing research about the invasion of Sicily. D-Day for operation Husky was 10 July 1943. Intend to write a book on the temporary American cemetery GELA on Sicily, where over 1,200 Americans were buried in the 1943-1944 period. I hope to finish the book on 10 July 2013, 70th anniversary of operation Husky.

I am looking for the men's and women's pictures killed in Sicily during World War Two, all kind of data/reports and pictures of the individual graves of the Gela cemetery. Also pictures of their graves in the United States or in the Sicily Rome and Florence cemeteries in Europe.

Update per 1 September 2013: am still working on the GELA book project, the Index of Names is finished, I have all the names of over 1,200 men and women buried at GELA complete, I know where they were buried then and now, have written several chapters, think four to five chapters still to go (friendly fire, Troop Carriers, 82nd Airborne Division, repatriation), have to buy several pictures and hope to finish the book at the end of the year.

Jan,
Yes, of course you can use them. It would be an honor. Although, I would like to re-take the photos without the date on them. If you could give me a couple of days and I'll take care of it. Thank you.

Nice to hear from you, and still looking forward to reading the book.

Jan,

Hi, I'm not related. I randomly found the grave of Doris Katherine Strobridge Steffens while taking pictures at Mt. pleasant one day. I saw she had a Daughter of the American Revolution marker on her grave and tried to connect her with her family as best as I could.

Sincerely,

Rich H.

Mr. Bos, I was reading through my messages and you sent one to me last year and I'm not sure that I answered..my apologies and I hope it's not too late for your GELA book but you asked if you could use the picture of the grave of Seaman First Class John H. Jones. I believe that if one puts a picture on findagrave that it is for anyone to use but by all means, use the picture any way you like. It is nice of you to offer to credit me for the picture but it's not necessary. Good luck with your books.

True story in Italy during the War.
Captain Corelli's Mandolin is a 2001 epic war film directed by John Madden and based on Louis de Bernières' 1994 novel of the same name. It stars Nicolas Cage and Penélope Cruz. Wikipedia
I saw the movie and I hope it helps with your research.
