Bio Photo There are over 98,100 souls buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond, Va. and 11,800 Confederate soldiers give or take a 1,000. The picture on the left Is the Confederate section Oakwood Cemetery taken in 1865. Please DO NOT WASH HEADSTONES!!! You can destroy them by using any kind of soap, bleach, Ajax. I came across a marble stone over 200 years old a few years ago. I went back and somebody had cleaned it. It was all pitted and the details were almost gone and the stone turned gray. Reason you do not clean them. There are chemicals in all modern cleaning materials. They will eat them away faster than the weather. SO LEAVE THEM ALONE!!! If you can't read them DO A RUBBING with paper and pencil. Post the headstone and the rubbing together. I also found out you can use thin aluminum foil using a soft brush and brush lightly over the letters. I'm starting to see where people are rewriting history to fit there agenda.//// F. A. Q. How do I get a relative's memorial transferred to me?
First, Determine if you really need the memorial transferred to you for management. Transferring of management should only be requested If you have extensive changes to make to a memorial. You can add photos and suggest corrections without having to request management. Simply having someone in your family tree is not grounds for a management transfer request. With hundreds of thousands of contributors, we have many overlapping family trees and it would be impossible for all contributors to manage their entire tree. Also, the goal is not to "own" every memorial of those to whom you are related. The ultimate goal should be to have meaningful, accurate memorials that honor those who have passed away, regardless of who created the memorial or who maintains it.

Thomas E. Gunn is my grand uncle. Please link him to his wife, Hazel Celsley Gunn, Find A Grave #3067467. Also, please edit his name. His middle name is Eugene. Thank you. I appreciate your labors. I am a minor contributor to Find A Grave in SC, trying to do a little payback. Thanks.

RE: Corporal Isaiah Benjamin Shirey # 108614270
DEAR MIKE B.---I KNEW MUCH MORE THAN A CLUE. I HAVE FOR A LONG TIME KNOWN WHERE MY GREAY-GREAT GRANDFATHER WAS BURIED, AS I'VE BEEN A MEMBER OF FIND-A-GRAVE OVER 5 YEARS & I THINK YOU'VE BEEN ON BOARD OVER 3 YEARS. I HAD CALLED & TALKED TO THE CHIMBORAZO CENTER ABOUT IT, LONG AGO. THEN I GOT A PHONE CALL FROM AN OLDER GENTLEMEN ON ONE OF THOSE CONFEDERATE VETERANS COMMITTEES ABOUT IT, WHO WAS ALSO SOLICITING THE GOVERNMENT FOR NEW MARKERS IN THAT CEMETERY. THEN I HAD MY SISTER'S BEST FRIEND FROM COLLEGE, JANET HADYN, WITH HER MOTHER FROM RICHMOND, PHYSICALLY GO OVER TO THE OAKWOOD CEMETERY @ THE RICHMOND NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD PARK (U.S. NATIONAL PARKS SERVICE) & FIND THE GRAVE & TAKE PICTURES, & VERIFY THE PLOT CO-ORDINATES. THE ONLY REASON I SAID HE WAS BURIED IN THE CHIMBORAZO CEMETERY IS BECAUSE THERE WAS A LISTING @ FIND-A-GRAVE CALLED THAT, BUT HAD NO BURIALS IN IT. IT SORT HAD MADE SENSE TO ME THAT THERE WAS A CHIMBORAZO SECTION OF THE OAKWOOD CEMETERY THERE NEAR THE CHIMBORAZO CENTER, THE SITE OF THE OLD HOSPITAL. IF YOU'LL CHECK YOUR OLD MESSAGES, YOU MAY REMEMBER THAT YOU ASKED ME IF ISAIAH BENJ. SHIREY PASS AWAY ON JAN. 15, 1862 & I CONFIRMED THAT HE HAD & I ALSO GAVE YOU INFORMATION ON THE BRANTLEY PERSON FROM WASHINGTON COUNTY, GEORGIA YOU HAVE A MEMORIAL ON. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------MITCH

Moses W. Wright
Mike,
I can't thank you enough! It's very moving to read some details about this Confederate soldier's death, particularly because it turns out that he was only 19 years old.
Just recently, through FindAGrave, I met a great-grandson of Captain W. H. Wright. I can't wait to share the information with him!
I had already checked some of the web pages you referred to about Richmond's Oakwood/Confederate Cemetery...
Now that I know Moses' middle initial, I find both him and his brother W. H. on this web page:
http://www.researchonline.net/alcw/index/index457.htm
There were two more brothers who served. James and John Wright survived the War, as did William. Perhaps this family was fortunate to have lost only one of four brothers to the conflict (but sad that it was the youngest one).
Many thanks,
Sandi

Z. B. Sansing
Mike,
I was thrilled to see you had a memorial for Z. B. Sansing. He's one of my Sansing cousins that we did not know where he was buried. I had his Civil War Service record which does not give his date of death or place of death so to find this is of great value to us. Do you know of any records that Oakwood cemetery might have that might shed some light on his date of death?

Thank you so much for adding this! He is a long way from his home in Louisiana
