I am an ardent genealogist with a love of history. I want to help document everything I can for the historical record. |
I will be happy to transfer memorials, with the exception of those that are for my family members or any that hold deep personal interest for me. Just drop me a note.
You have my permission to use any marker photos of your family members for your personal use. HOWEVER, that means using the marker photos I have taken for your personal use ONLY. That is not blanket permission to use any photo on Find A Grave. Please ask the other photographers for their permission. Thanks!
Cherish it, my friend; preserve it, my friend,
For stones sometimes crumble to dust
And generations of folks yet to come
Will be grateful for your trust.

|Robert Champlin||LYDIA E. HATCH - 64875349|
Dear Jane: I am trying to resolve some contradictory information that I have concerning Lydia Hatch and Byron Champlin.
There was a Byron Champlin enumerated at Eau Claire, Wisconsin in the 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses.
In the 1900 Census, Byron was enumerated as a boarder / brother-in-law in the home of Leonard Hatch who was married at that time to "Elizabeth" (29 Wisc) who presumably was Byron's sister.
In the 1910 Census, Byron was again enumerated in the home of Leonard Hatch but Leonard's wife is now called "Lydia" (39 Wisc) and Byron is again called brother-in-law.
In the 1920 Census, Leonard and wife "Lidia" (49 Wisc) are again enumerated with "brother" Byron Champlin.
Byron Champlin, who was born at South Sodus, New York in 1851 had siblings: Lydia Anne (1854), Lovina (1860), William (1862), Mary (1867) and Elizabeth (1870).
Lydia Anne Champlin was also born at South Sodus. She married Floyd Holly at Eau Claire c1875-6.
Lovina Champlin married (1st) William Trusty and (2nd) David Dorser - both times in Eau Claire.
I have no record of William or Mary Champlin marrying, though they both did live in Eau Claire.
Elizabeth Champlin lived in Eau Claire and until now I thought she was the one who marred Leonard Hatch. But your memorial on Find A Grave says that Leonard Hatch's wife "Lydia E." was the daughter of William K. Brownell and his wife Annie E.
Can you shed any light on this seeming contradiction? Do you know anything about the Champlin family?
I'm not saying you are wrong and I am not saying I am right - just that something seems off here.
The best explanation I can come up with is that MAYBE Elizabeth Champlin was adopted by the Brownell family? Reason I suggest that as a possibility is that Byron Champlin's father, Joseph Champlin was married to Elizabeth Ann Knapp and she was the mother of all six children. However, they divorced prior to 1876 (she remarried on Jan 19, 1876). Joseph Champlin married (2nd) Elvira (-?-) prior to the 1880 Census. Children William & Mary Champlin were enumerated with Joseph & Elvira in 1880 - but not Elizabeth. This suggests that Joseph's ex-wife did not take her younger children with her when the marriage broke up - rather, Joseph seems to have raised two of the three children still living in the home at the time. Perhaps the youngest, Elizabeth was too little for him to care for and work at the same time. Perhaps, as a result, Joseph gave Elizabeth up for adoption - to the Brownell family?
Any thoughts on this?

Jane, is John Wesley Hepburn a relative? His grandson (a dear friend of mine) recently died and I'm considering adding a memorial.
