I am researching the Rogers family (my mothers's line) of western North Carolina.
My gg grandfather James Rogers came from the area around 1843. In 1879 he wrote a letter, which I obtained a copy of, to his niece, Caroline Rogers Young (William Thomas Young). She was the daughter of Barney Rogers and Elizabeth Winfrey. Both of the latter are buried at Red Marble cemetery in Cherokee County. In the letter he mentions his brother and also another brother, Jery Rogers (Jeremiah) who married Mary Milsaps. This latter couple died in Oconee, SC. Finally another sibling was mentioned, Roety, who married a Phillips and moved to Kansas.
To make a long story short my ancestor, James, ran away from home at age 9 per family legend. He was b. 1833, Macon County, per his civil war enlistment papers. So his name would not have appeared on the 1840 census, and by 1850 he was no longer in NC, but now in south Arkansas and n. Louisiana where he later married and had family.
For the past 30 years I have been struggling to find the name of his parents. In the letter he mentions his father, but not by name, as being old, blind and living with Barney and having been married 3 times. the 1880 census reveals no old, blind guy living with Barney. However there are at least 2 candidates who fit the description. One in Tennessee and another in Georgia, not far from Cherokee County.
Over the years I have been in contact with a few descendants of Barney and other Rogers researchers who had no further info. Both Barney and James died before Death Certificates became routine. There is no family bible or other information. Recently I paid for my 1st cousin, who is a direct male Rogers descendant, to take the Ancestry DNA test. The results are haplogroup R1b with 46 markers.
The closest match on ancestry so far is 18 generations away. I have sent emails to a number of possible connects (none of them with a Rogers surname) with no responses to date. So, in summary, I believe that James was b. in Macon County in a section that later became part of Cherokee County. He left family behind (the story is that there were a total of 22 siblings by the 3 mothers). I think, and am possibly wrong, that he may be connected to the larger Rogers families of Robert David Rogers of Buncombe as a son of possibly Thomas Rogers or Hughey Rogers, James Bayless Rogers or even one of the other children of Robert. Or maybe even an entirely different Rogers line that I have yet to identify.
I recently was able to return home to Texas and now work from my home-office here in Tomball. However, we are remodelling our house and the resulting confusion often delays my ability to respond to correspondence. Please be patient and I hope to get to yours soon.

In regards to Carr Cemetery where you have listed memorial for Jerome Robert Russell: After much research I found Carr Cemetery. I have updated info on cemetery, added photo's, added memorials and their photo's. Jerome Robert Russell is not there.
In speaking with the people at Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville TN, they say that Loveday Cemetery in Sevier county TN, was previously called Carr Cemetery. They also said that is where Jerome Robert Russell is buried.
Please transfer his memorial and bio to Loveday Cemetery.

I appreciate you responding to my inquire concerning the location of Carr Cemetery in Sevier County TN, in which you listed Jerome Robert Russell. I have yet to find this cemetery, but have found that 3 of the 6 memorial listed are actually at Loveday Cemetery in Sevier County TN. Although findagrave.com does not list Jerome Robert Russell at Loveday cemetery, smokykin.com does.
I am thinking that Loveday Cemetery may have once been called Carr Cemetery, but have no proof. findagrave.com indicates 3 of the 6 memorials at Carr Cemetery, had death certificates stating burial at Carr Cemtery. Jerome is not one of those.
I would be interested to know how you determined that Jerome was buried in Carr Cemetery?
I am attempting to "clean-up" listings at Carr Cemetery.
Yes you may have the photo. Joan

A conflict won't allow me to fulfill your request on Mildred A. Hurley Knighton. I am transferring this to you. perhaps you can figure out what is wrong.
For the memorial correction you said Elbert Hurley was born in Warren, Columbia County, Arkansas. ...Warren is in Bradley County.
Which do you want?

Than you for your participation in the Rogers Genealogy, I am sure there may be errors in some of these details, but I will correct them as soon as I discover them.
I have removed the Leonard Ules Rogers who lived in GA from my genealogy program and will from the Find A Grave also.
There is another Leonard Ulys Rogers which I received and lived 1893-1926. This is a brother to My Lola Mae Rogers
I am personally acquainted with Lola Mae Rogers Thornhill B 4/2/1908-5/19/2004 D Knoxville, Knox TN. She was the 8th child (3rd dtr) of the union of John Sherman Rogers 1867-1952 & Mary Roxanna Jennings Rogers 1867-1962. Lola Mae Rogers was a sister to my Grandmother Cordelia "Dealy" Rogers 1902-1922. Lola Mae Rogers married Frank Morrison Thornhill 1905-1994 (no children from this union) My wife and I cared for Lola and Frank Thornhill from abt 1970 to their deaths. Frank died in 1994 and Lola died 5/2004 both lived in Knoxville, TN in the beginning of their lives and for the last 20-30 years of their lives. They lived in Portsmouth VA from abt 1940-1970. Frank was a shipfitter in the Norfolk Navy Yard there.
Lola also had a sister Ethel Rogers who married Henry Ervin and lived in Crossville, Cumberland TN. This is where her mother Mary Roxanna Jennings Rogers lived at her death in 1962.
|Lorri Godwin Gaines||Calvin Doyle Eddy|
Hi George. I wanted to let you know that I posted a picture of Calvin Doyle Eddy's headstone, but he is not buried in Sardis Cemetery. He is buried in Shiloh Cemetery in Lafayette County Arkansas. I live in Lafayette County and took this photo.
I see that you are wanting some other photos of Rogers' headstones. I plan to get these for you soon. I'll be glad to share any other information I have.
I am Juanita Lois Ward Smith Bell Rowe's grand daughter...but, I was adopted at four days old. Juanita was daughter of James Oliver (Barney) & Jewel Lois Rogers Ward.
I've been looking for information on my grandmother for about four years - under the last name that I knew her by (Rowe). John Armstrong helped me out with info from the newspaper - she was buried under the last name Bell.
Nice to "meet" you! :)
Have a GREAT EVENING! :)
