NWI mother of 3... Dedicated to preserving the memory and posterity of our ancestors, and I also enjoy learning about myself from the past, and also helping others to connect the dots as well.|
I am particularly interested in advocating for more respectable conditions for Oak Hill cemetery in Hammond, IN. My interest is personal as my family is buried on these historic, hallowed grounds. For more info:
INFO FOR TRANSCRIBERS ---- ::Very Important! Please Read!!::
* All existing headstones for Oak Hill have already been photographed and Memorials created.
We are now working to create memorials for those interred without headstones. Previous cemetery owners had wrongfully removed hundreds, if not thousands of headstones during the 1950's-1970's. This was very well documented in our local press. Recently we won a fight to have the cemetery property legally transferred to the local Township. The previous owners had not stepped foot on the property in over a decade and lived in another state. We began the arduous task of wading through decades of neglect, vandalism, theft and mismanagement. Relatives have access to burial information for the first time in decades. It is our intent to help provide this information and make it easily attainable.
The original transcription intent was to ONLY post burial cards when there were no headstones. For the last two years I have gone through thousands of cards in my free time and have toggled between screens to verify if there was a created memorial on here or not already before I uploaded any cards to site. They are all in Alphabetical order, and I was able to finish letters A-L. Recently I had my 3rd child and no longer have the time to complete this project. I would be forever greatful for your help.
I am uploading photos in a large file. Many will have memorials already created. You may upload burial card anyways if you choose, or go on to next card.
--------Most of you are seasoned Findagrave volunteers. If you find a card that may not be suitable for posting, use your discretion, or contact me and I will delete.
------Cards only have date of burial.... please post month and year of death.
------It is a balancing act to honor privacy and preserve and record history. If you feel that a card may violate privacy, contact me and I will delete.
------ Many of the cards have mispellings and errors. I am very familiar with many of the family names... if you have any questions dont hesitate to ask!
------ I also need help combing for duplicates. While working with spreadsheet option, it was suppose to catch duplicates but some got through. Any help scanning each Alpha letter would be great!
Once finished, we would like to be able to have the ENTIRE cemetery population recorded... with or without headstones. Afterall, this is finda GRAVE, not find a headstone. :)
If you are local and are interested in donating to Oak Hill, consider donating flowers, perrennials, work gloves, Menards gift cards, or even your time pulling weeds and helping to maintain the improvements to the grounds.
The South Shore Civil War Memorial Trail will help replace broken or worn headstones for Civil War Veterans and their wives. The organization will also help provide GAR Medallions, QR codes, and Special Markers for Wounded Veterans. Each Special Marker cost approximately $250.00 and each Medallion is roughly $10.00 and also comes with a fresh American Flag. These could not be possible without donations from the public.
South Shore Promotions Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization affiliated with the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority.
I will gladly take photos at St. Mary's and Maplewood Cemeteries in Crown Point, and will attempt to fulfill other requests on other cemetery adventures. I thank you all for your time!

I think what you're doing is AMAZING! and I'm happy to help. I wish I lived closer so that I could actually help physically. I don't get to choose what I transcribe however, so I hope to see more of your work in the future!

Not sure why you've uploaded a bunch of burial cards to the photo transcription thing, but I'm flagging them all "not a headstone." I do not believe posting burial cards is the intended purpose of the transcription thing. It's for transcribing headstone photos.
Hun i found your pictures for oak hill but not sure what i am suppose to do with them they are not headstones..

Thank you so much! I just read your site about Oak Hill - very impressive. I want to move your photo of his grave marker up. Much much better.

Kara, the obit was dated Aug 30, 1904 and his headstone shows 28 Aug 1904. His date of birth is given in a published book as 20 Dec 1883 and that matches the engraving on his headstone of 20y 8m and 8d. If I cold find them on the 1900 census it would help but so far no luck. His mother was Orril Pierce and his father was Joseph Schofield.
Hope this helps!

This is Karl Johann Friedrich Willhelm Stallbohm and his wife Wilhelmina Dorothea Magdalena Bottcher tomb stone. Their daughter, Wilhelmina Dorotha Henrietta Stallbohm Kaske was cremated and her ashes were buried with her mother, Find A Grave #85697485.
Was Albert Kaske Find A Grave #85874499 also cremated and his ashes buried with his grandmother?
Thanks, Jo Stallbohm

Hey Kara ... Findagrave.com memorial number 83497871 ... that is a photo I took prior to your great undertaking with Oak Hill's Restoration. Is there any way ... if you are ever out there ... that you could check and see if his stone has been reset and is fully viewable at this point? His relative contacted me recently to thank me and ask me why I chose his stone to photograph ... he wondered if I was related. I explained why I took it ... I wanted to document all the sinkin stones after finding all those stone piled in the back.
I'd like to be able to get him a better photo but I had surgery in late April and am just now getting back to work so no traveling for me yet.
Also, I still have a "gift" I'd like to get to you as a "thank you" for spearheading the effort to restore Oak Hill. If the current custodian at Oak Hill would be willing ... I can wrap it up for you and take it to the custodian and you can pick it up from there. Please let me know.

Kara! I am so far behind in my responses to people.
Congrats on the new baby! That is so awesome. We have a new grandson...well he's 10 months old now, Liam.
I'm dying (no play on words) to get back up to Hammond but just have not had the time. Maybe in the fall.
I wish there was more I could do to help out. I recently purchased a subscription to Newspapers.com and in the spare time, I've tried searching on "Oak Hill Cemetery, Hammond" in the old Times newspaper and added if they aren't already there or at least post the obit if there is not one listed in the memorial. I like obits as they give you addition clues.
Take care and congrats again on the new baby! This makes three if I recall as you have a son and daughter.
All my best,
