Bio and Links
Bio Photo I live in the Carytown section of Richmond, Virginia, USA, one time capital of the Confederate States of America. I grave the area of New Jersey to Georgia, mainly looking for family burials.

And often in visits to random cemeteries I'll see neglected or damaged or sinking markers, so I tidy them up, take a picture and post it, feeling like I might be their last best chance to be remembered to some future researcher. We all have the same goal, we're working for posterity, and I think this data base has become a number-one stop for researchers, and all because we collectively archive.

I'm a U.S. Navy veteran, Vietnam era, duty aboard the USS Canopus AS-34. I raised a family, but lost my wife. I made a career in newspaper production, am now retired, and enjoy volunteer gravestone photography. The best way I've found to get a readable gravestone photo is to redirect sunlight to cast shadows across the carvings.

Anyone who wants to use my photos may do so, without restrictions. It's all for posterity. They have been posted here for you to use. If you want a transfer, simply ask for it.

RE: Guerry lot ~ Elmwood Cemetery
Rich: I have reposted the photos to the proper persons and deleted them from LeGrand Sr.'s Memorial. Some I did not add because the others I thought were better. sjb

Photo Requests
Sorry, I just pulled active requests for Elmwood...yours were at the top of the list, no special instructions visible from the app I was viewing. If there are any you would like removed, just let me know.

Guerry Photo requests
I was at Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia, SC today and fulfilled your photo requests. When I got home and sat down to upload, I see you have taken your own photos. I have photos of all the graves in the family enclosure if you are still interested in any of them. I will be happy to e-mail them to you if you like.

RE: Guerry lot ~ Elmwood Cemetery
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. No offense taken at all. LeGrand Guerry was my very first volunteer undertaking for Find A Grave and I returned a few times to get the light right and gather family members. The multiple postings are the consequence of Find A Grave intricacies not yet learned. I will relocate them apprpriately. And you are absolutely right as to the address being Square 57 etc.

RE: LeGrand Felder Guerry ~ Elmwood Cemetery
I wondered how you got so many photos on the memorial!! They are all good-some just need to be moved to the correct memorial.

I had to make an adjustment to the obit and when I tried to repost it, I couldn't because there were 11 photos on the memorial. So I typed it verbatim and sent it to you. I am sorry it copied without the paragraph breaks-the original had them and they make it much more pleasant to read, looks better, etc.

I am having to remove a great many obits after typing them and I hate it, everyone wants the real McCoy. On the other hand, typing the obit makes it, and the names in it, searchable.

Unfortunately, I do not have the paper copy any more, and I somehow failed to note the citation. It was in the State, yes, and of course would have appeared a day or so after his death.

Thank you for the quick response and nice photo of the headstone. There seems to be confusion about Alex. I researched him yesterday and birth dates/death dates match up with Alex Shanahan, but there is one record that has the last name written as Shanahan, and above that they added Stranahan. Plus there is a memorial for Alex in a cemetery in Michigan, with death date that can't be read very well on the stone. So, I'm not sure who is at the site that you photographed today, was hoping his stone would include birth date/death date, but unfortunately it does not.

RE: Greenoaks Memorial Park ~ Shingleur
well the marker is most assuredly not in section 1.I walked and searched the whole section, even brought a broom to clean the ones covered with leaves. I also did masonic 1 which is right next to it with no luck. I often take pictures and add them but dont actually verify sections. i will look for it in other sections

Rich,
Thank you so much for locating the gravestone and posting the photo and information. It's so much fun to meet friends and relatives (some of which you may have grown up so close to and never knew were kin). It is especially appreciated for the long trip and number of ticks you incurred all for the sake of prosperity.
Thanks so much!

RE: Toliver Hanks ~ Cool Spring Cemetery
Dear Rich,
Thanks so much for the great Hanks grave pictures! With your permission, I'd like to include them in a Companion Disk for my cousin's book, "Abraham Lincoln's Hanks Family Genealogy", by Vicky Reany Paulson. I'll give you full credit for the photos.

Sincerely,
Jon Bidwell
