Bio Photo -She Walks These Hills-

"She walks these hills in a long black veil, she visits my grave when the night wind wails.
Nobody knows, nobody sees but me...."

(song lyrics by Dill and Wilkins)

------------------------------

For years I have been intrigued in researching the history of my family. I had no idea when you pull one thread, dozens more appear. I have met many wonderful fellow historians in this pursuit and in this aspect I am forever grateful to Find A Grave.

I simply enjoy people's stories and each grave and headstone mark a life that is interesting and worth knowing more about.

Often times we are so consumed by our own lives we forget- or overlook the voices from the past. They were here before us, we can learn from their lives.

Alexander Spotswood Moore
Hi. I have searched for years to identify with documented proof that Alexander Spotswood Moore was the son of Bernard and Anne Catherine Spotswood Moore but have been unable to do so. I do know that in about 1763 in Culpeper Co, Bernard Moore, of King William Co, was appointed legal guardian of Alexander Spotswood, son of the deceased John Spotswood, who was Bernard's wife's brother. Later, on 11 Jan 1768 in Culpeper Co, Bernard Moore transacts some land on behalf of Alexander Spotswood (Dorman, Culpeper Co VA Deeds, 1765-1769) with the verbiage "...guardian of Alexander Spotswood his son and heir". But careful reading shows that this phrase referred to the deceased John Spotswood, of whom Alexander Spotswood was his son and heir. Thank you for any information you might have!

Charles Bowcock Sands
This Message is for "She walks these hills"

I was wondering where you got the picture of Lt. Charles Bowcock Sands. It was over 14 years ago that I visited France and went to the Asine-Marne Cemetery outside of Belleau Wood. I went into the Monument at the cemetery and listed were the names of soldiers in unknown graves.
I am from VA (not related to the Sands Family) and next to his name was inscribed aviator(from what I remember)and VA. I was intrigued and started doing research. This led me to writing an article about him for the Over the Front Publication. If I remember correctly it was finally published in 2004. I wrote the article with another researcher and Mentor named Alan D. Toelle.
I tried reaching out to family or what I thought could have been family Via the regular Mail service and some old fashioned hand writing(The internet was not what it is today)and actually sent out letters to which there were no reply's. I did talk to someone at the HS school he attended but they never followed thru with information or a photo. I even contacted TW Woods and Sons where he worked for awhile no records of him were there. He worked there in 1914 so I did not expect much. Finally the Fraternity at The University of Richmond (Richmond College in 1914) replied and had a picture of him! The one you have posted would have been great for the article! At any rate are you related or do you know anyone that is related? I would love to send a copy of the article to anyone in his family. It was researched heavily and with the utmost care in bringing this mans story back to life.
Did I miss anything in my research? Possibly, there were a few things(minor)that I questioned but left out of the article.
He flew with some of the greatest pilots in his squadron and against some of the most feared pilots on the Western Front during WWI. Please get back to me so I can feel there is some closure and this man's family members can know what had happened to him, his story is quite extraordinary(at least it was to me)!

Thank you for your time
Steve

Photo of O.J. Sands
Hello,

I live in a home built in 2013 by Oliver Jackson Sands, Sr. I see that you have submitted a portrait of Mr. Sands to this site. Is it possible to learn more about the photo -- is it OJ Sands, Sr or Jr? Where was it found? I would really like to have a copy of the photo.

You can reach me at ebonbright@verizon.net

Thank you for your help!

Sarah Overstreet Goddin
Did you find her in the record book or see a gravestone? Years ago, when I when I went there, I went up the street to the church office where they had a book with the grave info from the original church. It is my recollection that the church in use today, which has been there since the 1700s I think, is the 2nd church and the original is on the back corner of the same property. It was excavated in about the 1920s when Wmsbg was under renovation and the names were recorded from the markers and recovered. I was wondering if Sarah was there or in the ones that can still be seen today. Any info? Thanks 7th cousin twice removed.
