Memorial 101509348
You sent an edit for a memorial for David H Gilkey from church records states "buried 1852. Son of John and Sarah Gilkey. About 12 yrs old." You wanted me to change to DOB to Aug. 15, 1828 with DOD Jan. 9, 1844. That would make him 16 years old and if died in 1844 not buried until 1852. I do not feel that the memorial I have is for the person you have sent information. Since all church and burial records have been posted on Findagrave for St Thomas cemetery, I feel your person must be elsewhere.

I will place this information all in the declination but wanted to inform you directly of reason for my choice. Thank you.

RE: Dr Helen Gilkey
This is wonderful. No, I'm not related to the Gilkeys. I think that Helen was a friend of my grandmother's first cousin, Mabel Clarissa (Glover) Root. Or, maybe a friend of Mabel's daughter Louise Glover (Root) Godfrey.

Mabel was a woman ahead of her time, graduating from Willamette University, College of Liberal Arts, in 1909, took off to visit a cousin in Honolulu a few years later and married George Harvey Root, whose family were farmers in Pendleton. I think there's way more to this story. Anyway, here's a little story about Mabel's daughter, Louise, on page 4.

Louise went to Reed, was a Navy Wave in WW II, was the "secretary" (she ran everything) of the Multnomah Athletic Club, was a longtime volunteer at the Berry Botanic Garden, and very involved in the native plants, which covered her yard on Council Crest. And, I feel sure that Louise had a copy of the Handbook of Northwest Plants.

Anyway, please leave me an address to which to send the photo and I'll get it to you ASAP.

It's always exciting for me to return these "orphan" photos to their kin. I have several more in the same envelope of a "trek" taken by George Root, Mabel, a "Miss Dunning" and a couple of other women from Bonneville to Multnomah Falls, where they camped out, then to Wahkeena and up Larch Mountain. 1915 or so. These I've offered to the Columbia Gorge group. We'll see what happens.

Dr Helen Gilkey
I have a photo identified as "Dr Helen Gilkey at Mt Hood" sitting on the stoop of a log cabin.
It was in with some other Mount Hood/Columbia River photos from the teens or twenties that I received from my cousin Louise (Root) Godfrey, who died at age 100 last year. Louise's mother, Mabel (Glover) Root, and Louise, were involved in the wild botany of Oregon, particularly the Rhodadendron.
Would you like to have the photo?
