My interest in cemeteries started with my interest in genealogy and collecting photos of family headstones. |
We live in the Kansas City, Missouri area. My husband has family in Mississippi and North Carolina (PRUITT, IRVING, SMITH, PATRICK). My family is mostly from Illinois and Kansas (HARTENBOWER, POWELL, SIMMONS, LANE). We try to include a cemetery stop or two on every trip we make.
I've been visiting local cemeteries in the Jackson County, MO area and taking photos. If no memorial exists I'll go ahead and enter one so I can post the pictures. If you run across an entry that I have made on the site that is yo ur family, please let me know and I will gladly make corrections or transfer the memorial to you.

|Baxter B. Fite III||Lemuel (Samuel) B. Powell, Co. K, 77th Illinois|
Dear Pearle, I am trying to sort out who Lemuel (or Samuel) B. Powell was and write a little biography about him for his Find A Grave site. At this point. I am not even sure what his first name was. I can not find a Lemuel Powell born in Virginia in the 1820's and only find this one Samuel. Here is what I currently have about him;
Birth: May 15, 1826
Death: Apr. 7, 1864
Illinois, USA [Edit Dates]
Private LEMUEL (or SAMUEL) B. POWELL, Co. K, 77th Illinois
Lemuel (or Samuel) B. Powell was born c. 1825 in ___________, Virginia, the son of ___________ Powell and ___________ (__________) Powell. His birthdate may actually be May 15, 1826. His parents may have died young as Samuel B. Powell may be the Samuel B. Powell who is found residing with the Wood family in Hampton, Elizabeth City, Virginia at the time of the 1850 census;
Samuel W Wood M 42 Virginia
Sarah C Wood F 46 Virginia
Samuel B Powell M 24 Virginia
Edward C Wood M 12 Virginia
Ann Maria Wood F 4 Virginia
Lemuel (or Samuel) B. Powell is known to have come west to Illinois, where he settled in Rosefield Township of Peoria County, but it is not known for certain when. It was most likely sometime between late 1860 and mid 1862 as neither a Lemuel or a Samuel Powell are found in the 1860 census of Peoria County. Lemuel (or Samuel) can not be found anywhere, however.
On August 13, 1862, Lemuel (or Samuel) B. Powell volunteered in Rosefield Township to serve in a company which was being raised for service in the Union army by Ephriam Carl Rynearson, a local, wealthy, well known farmer, who had brought his family to Peoria County in the mid 1840's, settling in Rosefield Township. At the time he volunteered, Lemuel's (or Samuel's) name was recorded as Samuel B. Powell.

Remarks DIED APR 7, 1864 AT OAK HILL ILL OF DISEASE
Lemuel (or Samuel) was sent back to Illinois sick, where he died in Oak Hill, Illinois in Peoria County on April 7, 1864. His body was laid to rest in the Southport Cemetery. Even though his name was recorded in at least some Government records as Samuel, his name is shown as Lemuel B. Powell on his Government issue tombstone.
Can you tell me any more about Lemuel (or Samuel).
I have been tracking down the local Civil War veterans since 1985 and writing about them in the local newspapers over the years. Thanks for any help. Sincerely, Baxter

Hello. Do you know what names are on the other sides of the marker in your photo on this memorial?
I am trying to determine who John's parents are.
Thank you and bless you for all you do.
