Transfer please
Thank you for the time you put into this. I was wondering if you transferred pages. I just found Find-A-Grave had been changes, easier to use & started doing more to add info to my relatives. You have my Grandfather, Lloyd Crago, Westview Cemetery in Carrollton, Ohio. Also his 2nd wife Bertha M. Crago. My #48473651. Thank you so much for your time. Connie

SERIOUSLY, I was the one that explained to you that I had, what turned out to be a duplicate, transferred to me...I also recall asking very nicely if I could keep mine.

Final Message about Sinclairs

Again, thanks for your help. I came across an online family history of James Sinclair and Eliza Sloan written by descendants. Turns out everything I provided was correct and there's more. I just thought I'd leave the link to the family information here in case anyone ever asks about the Sinclair monument again:

The information about James Sinclair and Eliza Sloan is after the front matter and table of contents on page 2 of this document.

Sarah Megaw Tipton, Ohio
Thank you for taking care of the site for my Great Great Grandmother, Sarah Tipton. I first found her grave in 2002 and have visited several times through the years. I last visited her grave June 10, 2014. I live in Georgia.
Thank you for taking care of her site. Thank you for accepting my request for her maiden name and the family connections.

Thanks for the quick update! Left the photos, but couldn't rearrange them so Marriage and death were followed by census. Illona

found the daughter Ann Sinclair

You may not be interested but given that you said you always wondered about the Sinclair monument. I've uncovered more about the Sinclair family in Carroll County and thought I'd share it with you.

I had already figured out that Ann Sinclair, the oldest child of James and Eliza Sinclair, had married Thomas Viers in Carroll County (marriage record). However, a little Googling revealed her second husband: Alonzo Lucious Littell.

I don't think Ann and her husband have Find a Grave sites and haven't found their death records yet.

I got a wealth of information because someone in the family interviewed Alonzo in the late 1800s before he died. His "remembrance" thoroughly explains the marriage and their children, Ann Sinclair's parents (James and Eliza), etc. Alonzo's interview/bio is in Littell Family newsletters. The first part of the interview is in the Fall 1977 issue and continues through into 1978 and 1979 issues. Lots about where they lived and what they did in Carroll County in the 1800s.

Good to know that you're from the area.

My next job is to learn about the family of my 3rd grandfather Clement Vallandigham McMillen (C. V. McMillen). He was an early doctor in Carroll County and married Mary Sinclair Feb 20, 1840, in Carroll County. They're in the census for Carroll County (1840, 1850, 1860). They then moved to Linn County, Iowa, where they died and are buried.

There was a famous politician in Ohio in the 1800s named Clement Vallandigham--his father Clement was a minister in Ohio. However, I can't find a connection there to my Clement Vallandigham McMillen--I thought maybe Vallandigham would be the maiden name of Clement's mother. Maybe the name was a nod to the minister who might have been a friend of the McMillens. Anyway, I was looking at Robert McMillen of Carroll County as a possible father of Clement V. McMillen-haven't found any evidence to support that theory.

I'm thinking I need to make a visit to Carroll County, Ohio, this summer to look for other records.

Take care and thanks again for all your help.

RE: Sinclair's
This does look like the right James Cameron. I've just started researching him. Feel free to let me know anything you come across that looks incorrect.

I was away from my computer today but noticed that you added a lot to the Sinclair family member pages. Thanks for all the time you are taking to help out!

Mother Sinclair
That looks liked aged 84 years to me--which is what the Ancestry transcript of the Sinclair monument says.

84 would fit with Eliza's age since she was born in 1797 and died in 1880.

Do you by chance live in Ohio near the cemetery?

Anyway, thanks so much for taking the time to correspond. Even it takes us some time to sort this one out, I'm happy to have found the marker for the Sinclair family as well as James Sinclair's will and Eliza Sloan Sinclair Cameron's obituary.

I'm looking forward to trying to access the Sinclair letters at the U of Michigan. They should shed more light on the matter.

I believe these are my 4th great grandparents (Eliza and James Sinclair).

Mother-James' wife

From what I can see on the photo of the Sinclair monument, the dates match up. Eliza died June 27, 1880.

First James Sinclair died in Sept 1838--he has a will in the Carroll County courthouse (can be found at that lists Eliza as his wife.
Eliza remarried James Cameron (marriage record at

An obituary for Eliza in the Carrollton newspaper said:
Mrs. Eliza Cameron, wife of James Cameron, aged and respected citizens of Carrollton, died in Philadelphia Sunday last at 2 o'clock p.m., aged 82 years, 10 months, and 25 days. The remains were brought to town Tuesday and were interred in the cemetery the following afternoon. She leaves a husband, four sons, three daughters, and a large circle of grandchildren. She was born August 2, 1797, in County Tyrone, Ireland, her maiden name being Sloan.

Also the woman named Ann Sloan (60 years at death) on the monument is Eliza's mother. I gathered some of this information from relatives on who are from the Sloan family. Eliza's parents were Alexander Sloan and Ann Marshall Sloan. Some of Eliza's Sloan siblings (such as George Marshall Sloan) lived in the adjoining county: Hanoverton, Columbiana,Ohio. In fact, George Sloan is mentioned in James Sinclair's will.

Let me know if I can provide further information.
