Born and raised in Apollo, Pa., which was the epitome of "Small Town USA," in the 1950's. Graduated from College, taught High School Biology for 6 years and then I grew up and joined the Navy. My goal was to Serve our country and see the world at the same time and then, after one 4 year hitch, I would resume a Teaching career. Things sometimes do not work out as planned...In 1997, after spending 22 years in the Service, I retired, back to my home, in Armstrong County, PA. Retirement has enabled me to work and concentrate on the main love of my life, which is my Family and Friends and, also enabled me the time to pursue my addiction to our family history and genealogy. There has also been ample time, left over, to engage in the secondary love of my life, which is fishing. Now, there had always been an interest in family history and genealogy and these fishing pursuits of boating, canoeing and tramping the streams, in search of the wily Trout and Bass has led me to many cemeteries, which are located in out of the way places. It is to the point...and, sometimes to the chagrin and frustration of my wife, where I cannot pass by a cemetery without "exploring a little bit." Thankfully I have married a wonderful and understanding wife, who, in spite of her seeming, sometimes frustration, just winks and grins whenever I tell her about the discovery of a "New" Cemetery...and then admonishes me to be sure not to miss anyone's stone. (As if I would, Eh?)
Many of the cemeteries, in this historic area of the country, are very old...some are grown over and a lot of markers are in advanced disrepair and are illegible. I have come to believe that we are losing our heritage and history, by allowing this to happen. After discovering Find-a-Grave, it has become easy to combine my hobbies with family history and the recording of the old cemeteries in my home area.
It is my goal to record as many of the small church or family cemeteries, as possible, in Armstrong County and adjoining counties, before I am too old to get out of the rocking chair. It is a guess there are still a few years, to go, before that occurs: I hope! | |

I am always glad to help with family research. I was also delighted to see such an interesting old marble headstone such as this as the subject of your request. Evergreen is filled with all kinds of memorials and is a beautiful "old" cemetery. The two clasping hands are not uncommon in Evergreen, and the aged appearance of the headstone makes it quite dramatic. memorials made of white marble like this are quickly succumbing to the elements, which makes it even more important that we record their existence.

Thanks, and no I don't have his because I doubt that it's up yet. He just died last weekend and I know the family was asking for donations to help with funeral expenses. I assume that means the headstone also. But, I'll check back weekly.

Thank you for the photos of Thos., Nancy [Ogle] & their son Thos. Jr. Culbertson taken in the Unity Chapel Cemetery.
These grand old stones, worn & repaired - now photographed and posted for all of us to enjoy.
I photographed them in 1989 and they were worn & torn even back then, but quite readable. The heavy conifers that surround them, the dried hydrangia blooms on the bushes [March] really a gentle, tranquil resting place.
