Bio and Links
I was born and raised in Tehama Co., in Northern California. I graduated from Red Bluff High School, Shasta College, and Chico State College. I retired from UC Davis in 2004 after almost 40 years service. I currently live in Carmichael, California with my beautiful wife of 7 years who humors and supports me in my genealogical passion.

My Zumalt family came to California from Missouri via Idaho in the 1920's. My mother's paternal Mohr family settled in the Cottonwood area in the 1880's, her maternal family (Stavig/Emerson/Gould) came from South Dakota in 1900 to settle in the Sharon Fruit Colony at Jelly's Ferry, Tehama Co.

My wife's paternal family (Lovelace/LeFever) came to the Sacramento/Folsom area from Missouri and all points East. Her maternal family names are Morrill, Johnston, and DeForest. The Johnstons and DeForests were among the earliest settlers in Lassen Co., California. Clinton DeForest, my wife's great great grandfather was a member of the John C. Fremont expeditions that explored the Western United States in the early 1840's.

I am currently working on California Zumalt/Zumwalts in Find A Grave. My theory is that almost all can be traced back to Andrew Zumwalt who immigrated to the US in 1737. Thus far I have been quite successful in proving my point. Any help with this project would be greatly appreciated.

I have been finding many of the photos that I have submitted to Find A Grave on various family trees on Ancestry.Com. I am honored to share these photos, but I would request that you add proper credit for the photos.

Michael, you say Delah is Clifford Syers, mother. If William Syers is Clifford's father why isn't Delah Williams's wife? What is your source for both Delah and William? Thank you, Kaye

Regarding Isaiah Zumwalt
Hi Michael,
When I was a child back in the early 1980's, I was good friends with the county historian for El Dorado County. His name was George Peabody.

George was widely known as the man who knew darn near everything about that region and over the course of a few years, I heard him tell the story of Isaiah Zumwalt quite a few times. He even took us by the old Zumwalt house near the corner of Big Cut Rd and Pleasant Valley Rd. (it's still there). I grew up walking distance from the house.

As far as his burial is concerned, George said that the town wouldn't allow Zumwalt's body to be buried in consecrated ground within the cemetary and that he ended up being buried in an unmarked grave just outside of the Placerville Cemetery not far from the gate.

I'm sure this is most likely undocumented, but if there was ever a man I would trust with any kind of verbal history, George Peabody was that man.

Hope this helps. If nothing else, you might at least find it an interesting bit of oral history.

Regards,
Chad

Memorial 17744072
Michael:

Thank you for your notice of a duplicate memorial. I've done some updating and correction to my data base on Mary Virginia (Zumwalt) Carlton Oliver and also to my entry on FindAGrave. The correction to my website should appear in the next week or so when I upload my file to my host. Regarding the duplicate memorial on FindAGrave, I notice my entry, that I am the maintainer of, predates the other entry. That does not mean a whit to me and I will be more than glad to transfer it to the other submitter if he requests same, or he may feel free to take my updated info and put it on his entry and upon his request, delete mine. I will also send this to him and it's his choice as to what he wants to do. I don't know how this will work in that I'm not the original creator of the memorial, but only the maintainer. But we may find out if the creator of the duplicate memorial responds. I will also send this message to him.

It's interesting that I have a double connection to Mary Virginia, both through my mother whose mother was an Oliver and great-grandmother was a Zumwalt.

Nice hearing from you again. How have you been?

Bill

Re: Etta Barrick
Hi Michael! Thanks for your concerns about her. But I have added an obituary for her that states her parents, etc. I can't take them off yet as I do not see the evidence for them being the wrong parents yet. Please let me know if you have other evidence, ok?

Thank you for the edit requests. They will be processed as soon as I review them. Just a reminder, or in case you don't know, I thought you might like to know that I transfer out of guidelines. If you would like custody of any memorials I manage please submit an Edit request using the "Suggest any other correction or addition" option. If I am not related I will transfer. Thank you!
