Thomas B. Chatham (1845 - 1920)*
|John Chatham||N. or M. Chatham|
Pvt. James Monroe Chatham 1828-1865
his son James Newton Chatham 1856-1949 (he would have been 5 years old when the Civil War started and 9 years old when the war ended. He told my grandfather, James Monroe "Roe" Chatham 1884-1984 that he filed for a war pension because when he was a boy he helped tend to various soldiers horses). He was denied a pension.
Pvt. James Monroe Chatham died from complications from service in the war. He is buried in the Castleberry Cemetery near Cumming, GA because he was married to Eliza Castleberry Chatham. The mix up occurs because Pvt. James Monroe Chatham's grave marker says "James N. Chatham" that is a "grave" error - yes a pun is intended!
James Newton Chatham 1856-1949 is buried along side his wife Mary E. Johnson Chatham 1859-1941 in the Sugar Hill Cemetery.
I was told that relatives in Alabama have a picture of Pvt. James Monroe Chatham in his CSA uniform and hopefully one day we will be able to obtain a copy.
There were other Chatham cousins by the name of James that served in the CSA all from Forsyth, Old Milton County, & Gwinnett area.
I sure hope we end the confusion of the N. or M.
John W. Chatham

Would you know who had the headstone placed and where they might have gotten the information from?

Jean thanks so much for the transfer. My next question is do you or maybe any relatives have any pictures of Eliza or James Chatham. My interest in this family has peaked since i researched James civil war history and found his pension papers which were filed by his wife.
There was and is a lot of confusion apparently by my family on the whole middle name issue. A great uncle had done a lot of foot work on the family tree and traveled around quite a bit gathering information on this family. i wanna verify and prove the whole middle name issue which my cousins had messaged you about as much as anyone. The problem is no document i have researched that is online so far can back up those claims of him being James Monroe Chatham. His name simply appears on his civil war papers as James Chatham,his pension papers filed by his wife simply list him as James Chatham, and all the witness statements on his pension papers list him as James Chatham. No letter "n" or "m" or "Monroe". i researched all the census records available online and he is listed again as James Chatham while living at home with his siblings. I believe while my great uncle had the best of intentions of being accurate that he may have gotten him confused with the other James Chatham buried in Forsyth county whose middle was Monroe. To make matters worse he also died from complications of disease or injury as a result of his service in the civil war. Way too many similarities to simply ignore with no way of researching the critical details and comparing the similarities. Thank you so much again...
