I have always been interested in cemeteries. As a teenager we would stop at old cemeteries and we would read the old headstones. |
In 1981 while going through my mother-in-law's keepsakes I came across an obit for her uncle who had died young. I was taken by the wording and I want to find out more about him. I was hooked. We have traveled to many states looking in cemeteries and libraries.
My husband, Doug and I retired in 2008. We live in Modesto, California. We now have lots of time to work on our family research. We have a daughter, Jennifer and a son, Kevin. Kevin is married to Glena; they have a son, Shawn, he was born in 2004. Our grandson, Shawn is our reward after many years of long hours of work.
I registered years ago but just started using the site Feb 2009; I also volunteered to look up graves in our area. Shawn and I put on our detective's hats and went to investigate. It was very rewarding.
If I have added in any of your family I will be happy to transfer the memorial to you. You may use any photo that I have posted, that is what we are all about SHARING information and finding our loved ones final resting place. It would be nice if you gave us the credit for the photo or info, so we could learn more from others also.

THE RECORDING OF A CEMETERY
BY THELMA GREENE REAGAN
Today we walked where others walked
On a lonely, windswept hill;
Today we talked where others cried
For loved ones whose lives are stilled.
Today our hearts were touched
By graves of tiny babies;
Snatched from the arms of loving kin,
In the heartbreak of the ages.
Today we saw where the grandparents lay
In the last sleep of their time;
Lying under the trees and clouds -
Their beds kissed by the sun and wind.
Today we wondered about an unmarked spot;
Who lies beneath this hollowed ground?
Was it a babe, child, young or old?
No indication could be found.
Today we saw where Mom and Dad lay.
We had been here once before
On a day we'd all like to forget,
But will remember forever more.
Today we recorded for kith and kin
The graves of ancestors past;
To be preserved for generations hence,
A record we hope will last.
Cherish it, my friend; preserve it, my friend,
For stones sometimes crumble to dust
And generations of folks yet to come
Will be grateful for your trust.

Thank you so much for the photo. I have been neglectful in my thanks to you. I hope that you have a great Thanksgiving and know that I am thankful to you and others that put grave marker photos on Find A Grave.

Hello! Thanks so much for the fantastic photos. I'm grateful for your extra effort in labeling graves in the area. Looking at the enlargement I think I'll be able to find it the next time I'm in Modesto. I was able to find about ten graves last week but have at least that many to go...unless I put in photo requests and turn it over to generous folks like yourselves. Might just do that as I probably won't be back until February. Have a wonderful holiday. ~ Nancy

Thanks -- I'm thinkin' I didn't see another Breckenridge in the whole cemetery. One of those lost souls we may never track down all the details on.

Thank you for the photo of my great grandfather's marker. The time you take to do this for others is really appreciated. Have a good weekend.
Doug & Marilyn,
Thank you for searching for this marker and for photographing the site. I believe Beulah was the daughter of Wilson Abram Harris Gilstrap and Ada May Doughty, because they had a daughter born on August 15, 1914, which would make her the same age as Beulah, 18 days old when she died. The California Birth Index lists this daughter's name as Pearl, but she is not found in any other records, so I think Pearl and Beulah must be two names for the same child. Thanks again for the photo.
