Major contact update a/o September 5, 2014:|
My old Iowatelecom email address (firstname.lastname@example.org) was purged without my permission by the Windstream ISP on September 3, 2014.
I no longer have access to any emails going to that email address and any from you to that email address will presumably 'fail' to be delivered.
Please note below my new email address to use to contact me directly for FindAGrave/genealogy items.
If you have been in contact with me before, please update your contact list as anything now sent to the Iowatelecom email address will not be available or forwarded to me.
Grrrrrrrrr. Not fun.
As of May 26, 2013, I am reserving the right not to make transfers of memorials to contributors who shield their identity by being "Anonymous" in their screen names, especially if their profile pages disable messages and email contact.
My belief is that contributors and managers of memorials should be held to a high degree of responsibility to honor the deceased, and the use of "Anonymous" for a screen name, and disabling of email and message contacts concerns me greatly as to how memorials would be or are managed.
As others do, I enjoy walking the cemeteries in response to a single photo request and then finding many additional family members that someone requesting the initial photo was unaware of. My record so far was finding over 50 family individuals in three cemeteries as a result of a single photo request made for this area! They are now each with memorials, links, often obituary information, and headstone photos.
It is good to know that these deceased families and individuals are now remembered.
I have also documented with memorials and, if possible, headstone photos, several entire small, rural cemeteries to keep them preserved for future generations.
As needed, I use the genealogy resources of the Jefferson County Genealogy Society at the Fairfield Public Library (Fairfield, Iowa) for much of my local "documentation" and sourcing; I also take advantage of the courthouse vital records and probate materials to examine first hand some of the materials that help me put on genealogy information and determine relationship links for my memorials, and to suggest corrections or updates to memorials made by other contributors where possible. Of course, there are online genealogy websites that I often use as well to confirm or not confirm some family information and relationships.
Note: I (and others) also have contributed headstone photos to Iowa Gravestones Photo Project website for linking purposes from the IaGenWeb.org/Jefferson county genealogy website. My screenname on IGPP was formerly "thompsonrb". That has now been changed for all of my submission to "iowagenealogy.jeffersoncounty" because of my email address change.
I strive to have my memorials as accurate as possible but errors or mis-information in my sources happens. If you see errors or corrections, I'm glad to make them. "Edit"/SAC is best, but direct emails or public messages are ok. If not by SAC try to provide the memorial number because just providing names doesn't alway ensure I know who you are wanting updated, especially in cases where there are fathers and sons with the same name. My Ouiji board is broken and I can't read minds.
The new edit system now allows for suggested links to parents and spouses - for the most part I'll accept them "as is", but reserve the right to verify if possible.
New edit and spouse link edits:
Be aware that if a memorial has at least one parent and/or spouse link on it (from that memorial), then submitting a new-style relationship edit will override those existing links and cause those existing links to be deleted or, worst-case, duplicated.
For example, a memorial has no parent links, but does have a link to a spouse. Submitting a new-style relationship edit to just add parents will then, unintentionally, cause the spouse link to be deleted. Unless caught by the manager of that memorial first, accepting such edits are having the effect of undoing existing relationship links. Few memorial managers are aware of this problem.
Although well-intentioned to combine the parent and spouse relationship links into one new edit, it may be best to be very careful when submitting new relationship link edits - perhaps using the older SAC method instead, providing the names and memorial #'s of those to be linked to.
Hopefully this situation will get resolved, but be aware of this problem. Only the manager of a memorial can tell if a spouse relationship is to or from another memorial - you can't tell just by looking at either memorial.
The workaround for managers is to first spot existing relationship links, if any, and note the relationship status and memorial number. Then if the new relationship link is accepted, go back to that memorial and re-enter the correct link information.
I much prefer working with contributors who use their real names rather than initials or quirky screen names. I'm a bit old fashioned: in real life I address people by their given name, unless they use a 'regular' nickname. Getting or sending contacts to others who use only initials (gender non-specific) or quirky screen names is not how I was raised to address people, especially since memorials on FindAGrave are for people with real given names.
Being forced to send a SAC to another contributor as "Dear RubberDuckyLover" devalues the respect that I feel that the deceased deserve.

Thanks so much, Richard! You are always going above and beyond!! You do so much for all of us! I appreciate the service you provide to all of the descendants of these memorials! You are the best!
Are you related to Alma Cox? I have a photo of her that I bought in an antique store years ago. I will be scanning the photo to put on her memorial, but would like to send the photo to someone of her family.

|Malachi 4:6||another son|
hi richard, i am not smart enough to figure out if i am supposed to "add" family members or if you are. anyways, william wilson cline has another son named henry stephen cline with his second wife, mary bradfield and he and his wife and child are buried in the Hale Center Cemetery in Texas. they already have memorials on findagrave, but are just not linked to his family. forgive me if this is irrelevant information, i have this on my family tree and have backed it up with multiple census records as well as a death certificate. thank you.
|Pattie Ford||Nelson Pearson|
Thanks for all you have done and glad to see you found Emma. I stumbled (LOL) on the burial records for Nels and wondered abt Emma at the time I built his memorial. I think that Nelson is the brother to Svan Pearson (Find A Grave #132300085). It is Svan that is in my line or family tree. I was trying to see if I could research and prove that these two are siblings. Maybe find out who their parents are. But had no luck thru both men.
