I'm also a tattoo historian. In addition to genealogy, I research tattoo artists and the history of tattooing. Bert Grimm, a well known twentieth century tattooer, was my Great Great Uncle. (Find A Grave Memorial# 31432503)
One highlight of my tattoo artist grave site research was a road trip my husband and I embarked on in 201--from Washington State to Southern California. After in-depth investigation to find burial locations (before so much info. was available on the internet), we planned our vacation route around visiting the burial sites of some of tattoo history's greats. Among them were:
Ben Corday, Charlie Barrs, Owen Jensen,
LL McKeever, William F. Jackson,
Red Gibbons, Ernie Sutton,
Otto Mason, and Harry Lawson.
It was a lot of work, but an inspiring experience. At the time, most of these graves had been long forgotten. I'm happy to learn--from Facebook and Instagram posts, blogs, and magazine articles--that others are now able to pay their respects because of my research.
My virtual cemeteries (to the right) include information on these tattoo artists and a good number of others I've researched, such as:
C.H. Fellowes, Samuel F. O'Reilly,
Elmer Getchell, Sailor George Fosdick,etc.
I've created a good number of these memorials; some I've identified on other members' pages; and others were both created and identified by fellow Find A Grave members. This project is a work-in-progress. I'll be adding more memorials and history as I have time.
You can learn more about these tattoo artists on my website Buzzworthy Tattoo History. See link below.

Are you related to E.M.? That is a beautiful photo on her memorial site. I am a cousin of her husband, Jack (William Nealon) Burke. I would love to be able to put that photo in my files, if you own it. thanks, Reverie Rowlett

|Autistic Savant||Lewie the Original Tattooed Boy|
Hi Carmen. I greatly appreciate the work you have done in compiling this research of tattooed show people of the past. I too am interested in these unique people. I am wondering if in your research you have ever come across an individual billed as, Lewie, the Original Tattooed Boy? I would like to learn of his full name and who he may have worked for, assuming he was with a sideshow. According to one site, it claims his photo was taken in 1890 when he was age 15. It says the other kids hated him because he was allowed to get tattoos. Another site I ran across states the picture may be from the 1920s. So whether it is 1890 or 1920s I don't know. His picture is easy to find by doing an internet search for Lewie Original Tattooed Boy. Thank you for any help you may be able to offer.

Greetings, Carmen, I have come across a picture of what looks to be "Lillie May Hinman" (last name is very hard to make out) as a child that I found in an antique shop. I think she might be the same person for whom you have made a memorial, and I see the Hinman name amongst your research names. I could e-mail you a digital copy, which is superior to the original. Do you have any pictures of Lillie? Best wishes in your research, Chris Wogaman

Just finished reading the article in the Boston Globe "The Hand That Held The Needle" with nearly half the article about your own research. Congrats.

|Shirley Wadell||James S. Lane b.1787 d. abt 1862 Clark Co, KY|
Hi. I'm doing research on the Roberson family, mainly Calvin C. Roberson [b.1810 Clark KY d. 1896 Clark KY] who married Elizabeth Lane. Supposedly she was born about 1814 KY [I'm thinking it could be 1816] and died 1852 Clark, KY shortly after the birth of her last child daughter Sarah [according to research on Ancestry]. I'm wondering 'if' Elizabeth Lane is the daughter of James S. Lane. Can you help me?
I would appreciate any information. I look forward to hearing back from you very soon.
Thanks, Shirley :)

Carmen, might you be able to identify the people in the photo you posted for Jesse White McDonald? Nancy Davis Bailes McDonald was the wife of my 1st cousin 5x removed, Jacob Bailes. Thank you for posting. Pat #46836434
