Are you a genealogy addict ? Ask me about joining GoClub-Belmont County, a private social networking site where members share info. and photos regarding Belmont Co. genealogy.|
I'm also looking for volunteers to help add names to Belmont County cemeteries.
My brother "Skip" and I enjoy genealogy. He's my expert regarding Belmont county, OH. We both take photos of tombstones, especially of family members. Some of the surnames are Bain, Bane, Blaine, Budd, Curtis, Giffen, Giffin, Griffith, Haines, Hepburn, Hinkle, Keyser, Long, Milligan, Pond, Spears, Shahan, and Terrill.
I started using the FAG app on my iPhone to photograph tombstones and simultaneously record their gps location. It's so easy. I enjoy using it.
UPDATE: Skip started a GIFFEN DNA Group.
In addition to Belmont county, OH, we explore Ohio and Brooke counties in WV. I travel between Belmont Co and Columbus, OH. So, I make a few stops along the way, such as Cambridge or Zanesville.
I look for family tombstones across the country and try to link them back to Belmont Co., OH, Ohio Co., WV, and PA.
I have several GIFFEN / GIFFIN family trees at ancestry.com. There's my Giffen family which started with Robert and Mary (Bane) Giffen. Plus a family tree for the Andrew Giffin family. I recently started a Simon Giffin tree.
My ancestry.com tree name is "Terry Magyar"
More recently, I've added family trees for Giffens/Giffins in the following Ohio counties; Athens, Butler, Coshocton, Licking, Miami & Hamilton, and Ross County. Many of these Scotch-Irish lines can be followed back to the late 1700s, in Penn.
I presently live in Franklin Co., OH, but grew up in Belmont Co., OH.
Please contact me (use the EDIT function) if need an item corrected of if you have additional information regarding any of the these families.
I highly recommend the Cumberland Trail Genealogical Society's book "Your Guide to Belmont Co. Cemeteries". ($20 + shipping)
************ IMPORTANT ***********
You may use my photos, however I ask you credit your source, not just for me but for all the findagrave volunteers.

Terry, please remove this statement you put on from the memorial for Andrew J Heath that you put on as it confuses folks. This Heath in Upper Wegee is not related to the one you're noting that I'm related to:
- per Cameron-Ashley Heath (#46896958), Direct descendant of Israel Heath and Elizabeth Blue through their son Richard Blue Heath.
I'm pretty sure I sent in the edits to link to the parents. Did you check your edits submitted upper right and process them?

When I looked at the photo again I thought it was 1874 also.

Yes, that's it. The next time I'm there I'll look at it again & see what I can make out.

While I was taking pictures I ran across an older stone near your Giffens/Giffins that I think says J.M. Giffen MD died 5Dec1871 age 33? I didn't study it too closely. I figured you already had him but I don't see him. I could be wrong about the dates. Any idea who he is? I did take a photo.
I just posted a picture of what I believe is Jesse Cordner's headstone. It is next to Elizabeth and John Cordner.

Have been taking photos of Sells for genieresearcher. The lot where John & Harry Sells are buried has 4 corner markers. Across the back of the lot, left to right, are Father, Mother, Earl, John & Charles. John's stone is quite large but the other 3 sides are blank. I think "Mother" is prob Sarah & "Father" her husband. Didn't know if you would want this photo posted or not. The stone with Mother on it has sunk into the ground & is leaning forward. I tried to move it but it wouldn't budge.

Hi Terry, John Giffin is my Great great great grandfather. He and his first wife Phobe Spears had a daughter Martha Frances Giffin. My mom might have some notes about this but I think Phobe may have died during childbirth. We have some pictures of Martha Frances and one of John Giffin. We never knew he was a civil war veteran. Our next trip to New Straitsville we will visit his grave. Martha Frances and her husband William Spencer are buried at the Dawley-Downhour Cemetery that we visited in August. Cheryl

There is a Rev War Pension application for a Wm Craig who resided in Belmont Co OH. He was a very young soldier in the Rev War. This Wm was born in MD according to the Pension Application. It's worth researching for Craig or Craige family of Belmont Co.
