1) OECONYMS: Slovenian gravestones often contain oeconyms (farm/house names, hišna imena). Sometimes it isn't clear which name is the surname and which the oeconym. In some cases I've entered oeconyms as surnames when no surname is available. Corrections are appreciated. Try searching an individual Slovenian cemetery by first name instead of last name if you think a memorial may have been entered using an oeconym.
2) DIACRITICS: This site no longer searches for many special characters (čšž äöüß etc.); searching for them returns reconfigured names (e.g., looking for "Božič" returns only "Boi"). To find such records, try searching by truncated last names ("Bo" for "Božič"), and/or first names that don't have diacritics ("Zofija Bo" for "Zofija Božič," "Marica" for "Marica Črv"). (Select "Do partial name search on surname".) Also try scanning known cemeteries ("View all interments"), which is a good idea anyhow because of spelling variations.
Another option: enter "site:.findagrave.com" (without quotes) followed by a space and the name you are searching for into your web browser (e.g., "site:.findagrave.com božič").
3) ALPHABETIZATION: Names with diacritics don't properly alphabetize (ČABC...XÜYZÄÖŠŽ), so be sure to scan up and down lists when searching.
4) WRONG CHARACTERS: This site used to convert some letters with diacritics (e.g., č > è). I've updated my entries to fix this (please let me know if you see any I missed).

|melickc||RE: John Hire (Memorial# 33936909)|
I'm pretty sure that this is the same John Hire. His will (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1971-31312-10296-81?cc=1992421&wc=M934-VZH:710695470) lists children including (1) Thomas W. Hire, whose mother is Mary Pollock according to a marriage record (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XD2H-W5T) and (2) William B. Hire, whose mother is Mary Wortman according to a marriage record (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XD2K-K82).
Hope that helps!

Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery

Hi Donald-I checked a couple of things with the cemetery office and here's the story. The grave used for John Persin (Pershin) was a term grave. That means it had essentially a 20 year lease and at the end of 20 years the recorded responsible person for the gravesite has the option of purchasing the grave site. There's no record that it was purchased in 1939. What they do with term graves is they bury them deep. If the gravesite is not purchased then they can bury another person above him. It looks like that's what happened with John. There is no gravestone for him but he's still there. If you want, I can get a picture of the gravesite for you even thought there isn't a stone.

Thank you so much for the work you have done in translating some of these headstones.

The reason I ask is because I thought there was a problem with the date on the stone. I did not think he was part of the second group of "survivors".
