I got hook on genealogy after talking to my Grandfather (George E. Deskins) about the "Good Old Days" and how he had a story about everyone and everything. I started by researching only wanting to do my immediate family but it has escalated to years of research, meeting wonderful people, hearing amazing stories and with much help from other dedicated researchers. After joining FAG it keeps getting better and better.
I hope that all of realize that we all are related and should treat everyone the way we want to be treated.
My main research is on all the Deskin, Deskins and Deskines lines, but I also do Jackson and Matney

More Kansas Deskins

I see on the site that Mom, Helen Deskins Brune, has two listings; one under #113213434 maintained by you with Mom's obit and #124285160 maintained by me with pics of Mom's new stone. Is there anyway to merge the two?

Kansas Deskins
Hi Sue,

I have been down to the Clinton Cemetary, Douglas Co, KS recently. I haven't yet had a chance to dig out my geneology stuff, but I did re-look at the stones, took pics, and made notes.

I see that Mariann Deskins (#48435516), 2nd wife of CF Deskins,is spelled Mary Ann instead of Mariann. I think the Mariann is correct - that is how it spelled on the stone.

I am in the process of checking my notes with info on this site. And, add pics if there are any blanks.

Thanks. Deb - your distant cousin. :)

Jacky Basl
Hi Sue:

I think this has been cleared up by the gal that put the other two obits on.

Thank you very much for looking into it.
Sorry you are not related to Larry & Judy, they were a beautiful couple.

My name is Jacky Basl, and I'm related to the wife of Larry R. Deskins, Judy. I see where you are checking out all of the Deskins names. In checking out Larry's Find A Grave, I see where there are three of his obits listed. #71329273 &71375599. The first two do not have the cemetery listed and yours does. Researching the name Deskins, I'm sure you knew where Larry is interred. What I'm trying to say is maybe these can be combined into one. I would appreciate any help you can help me with the obits.
Thank you,
Jacky Basl - #46780516

Were you related to Larry and Judy?

Maxie Deskins Daniels
Maxie was my grandmother. She had 2 brothers and her parents were Lewis Benjamin Deskins and Matilda Jane Hensley ("Tilda" / "Granny"). Maxie's only child (Fay Elizabeth Smith Roberts) was my mom. She died January 22, 1976 of cancer in Wheeling, WV and is buried next to Maxie in the Deskins family cemetary in Kimper, KY.

We have researched the Deskins' lineage.

Please note that multiple types of records were researched online including US & Colonial Census, County Birth Records, County Death Records, Marriage Licenses, Family Bibles, Election Records, Military Service Records, pre-1800 Town & County Population Records, etc. Thus, this combined listing includes many partial, missing, and conflicting dates. Anyone having a corrected date, name, death, marriage, or birth location, etc. is urged to contact Jon Barry Roberts or Katie Roberts.

Lewis Benjamin Deskins ("Ben") was born January 27, 1867, at John's Creek in Pike County, KY; died March 15, 1943, (age 76) in Kimper, KY & buried in the Deskins' family cemetery in Kimper.
Matilda Jane Hensley ("Tilda" / "Granny") was born February 25, 1879 in Pike County, KY; died March 8, 1974, (age 95) in South Williamson, KY, and buried in the Deskins family cemetery.
They married in 1897 when Matilda was 18 and Ben was 30 (month and date are both needed). They had 3 children: Garrett A. Deskins, Sr. [born March 1898 in Kemper (date needed); died October 1, 1959]; Goody Ray Deskins (born in Kemper in 1900; month and day of birth needed - died June 12, 1958); and Maxie Deskins (her official birth record says "Maxel") born in Kimper, KY on February 28, 1904; died September 27, 1999 in Savannah, TN, and buried in the Deskins family cemetery, Kimper, KY).

"Ben" Deskins was the 7th child (of at least 8 children) of Lewis and Martha Jane Williams Deskins. Lewis Deskins was born January 27, 1831 (some records show 1829) in Louisa, Pike County, KY, and died December 6, 1913, (age 82 or 84) in Kimper, KY. Martha Jane Williams was born December 9, 1831, possibly in Luny, NC (other records show VA or KY; need to confirm location) and died March 19, 1911 (age 79) in Kimper, KY.
Lewis and Martha Jane Williams Deskins married February 15, 1849, in Pike County. Their children in birth order were: John W. (1850 died after 1910 census); Emeline (April 26, 1852 March 17, 1925; had 10 children); Mary (1853 died after 1910 census); James M. (1857 died after 1910 census); Henry (1861 died after 1910 census); George M. (1864 died after 1920 census); Lewis Benjamin "Ben"; and Matilda (1869 unknown, but some records suggest she died at birth or shortly thereafter).

Lewis was about the 8th child of John J. Deskins and Rebecca Holt. John J. became John J. Deskins, I at the birth of his son John J. Deskins, II. John J. has been, and still is the subject of extensive research, primarily because one Virginia record places his birth in 1774. Most records, and some distant family information, place his birth in 1794 or 1795. He was born in Russell, Tazewell County, Virginia and died in 1858 in Pike County, KY.
John's first wife was Mary Polly Totten, a young widow of John Totten of Hempstead, Nassau County, New York. Mary Polly (maiden name unknown) Totten was born in 1797 in Smyth, VA and married John J. Deskins, on April 4, 1814 in Virginia (record still exists). Their children included Esther (b. February 28, 1815; died 1851 in KY); Elmer (died as infant late 1815); Smith (December 1816 unknown); Rebeccah (1817-1908); Sally Sarah [some records say Sarah Sally (born March 23, 1818 in Pike County; died February 13, 1900 in Logan County, WV)]; and George Washington (might have been born in 1819; no additional info found so he and Mary may have died during birth - speculation). Mary Polly Totten's death is placed in spring 1819 (1 record has 1818).
Please note: The mother and dates of birth for John J.'s children Nancy and George Washington are in question. One record places Nancy's birth in 1819 or 1820.
Rebecca Holt was born about 1797 in Madison, KY and died February 1860 after 9 days of Palsy.
John J. Deskins and Rebecca Holt married on July 30, 1819 in Floyd County, KY and a perfect marriage license still exists at the courthouse. John J. and Rebeccah had about 10 children: John J. Deskins II (January 31, 1821 June 12, 1886); James W. (March 3, 1823 June 17, 1911); Nancy and Elizabeth [Nancy, May 7, 1824 1838?; Elizabeth, May 7, 1824 1903 (died in Minnesota; married to Ben Maynard on December 29, 1839)]; Nathaniel Jackson (June 1, 1828 May 6, 1910 in Mingo County, WV); Lewis (January 27, 1831 - December 6, 1913), Harrison (1834 1928/1929 in Corvelis, Washington [started the branch of the Deskins family around Spokane, WA], "Judge" Jackson Deskins (b. April 1837 or 1938 in Louisa, Lawrence County, KY; d. February 27, 1923 and listed as "buried in Deskins family plot on John's Creek, KY"); "Judge" was a wealthy land owner and popular character who had 24 children by 4 different wives and became a well-known and respected judge; Dowell (about 1840 - ?); and Jefferson (about 1842 - ?).

John J. Deskins (1st) was the son of Daniel Deskins and probably Rebeccah Roark. Daniel was born in 1726 in St. Paul, Stafford County, VA and died in 1793. Daniel probably had three wives with two of them being sisters.
His first wife was a widow with her first name and maiden name unknown. She had been married to a Brewer and brought a son Isaac Brewer to the marriage. The marriage date is thought to be about 1745. Her date of death is speculated at late 1747 or early 1748.
Daniel then married Sarah Roark in 1748. Sarah was born in 1728 in St. Paul, Stafford County, Virginia. Daniel and Sarah "Sally" had children, but only William and Mary have named records. No birth or death dates are known. It is believed that Sarah died about 1759.
Daniel married Rebeccah Roark Millard (Sarah's sister) about 1761. Rebeccah was also born in 1728 in St. Paul, Stafford County, Virginia, with an unknown death date (it was on or after 1793). Nothing mentions Rebeccah and Sarah Roark being twins. Rebeccah was married to a Mr. Millard before her marriage to John. The Millard's had at least 3 children that Rebeccah brought into her marriage to Daniel. They were Rachael, Rebecca, and Timothy (no birth or death dates known).
Daniel and Rebeccah's only three known children are: Richard Daniel (1780-1860), Sally (1785 unknown, but she lived to be married and have kids), and John J. Deskins (probably 1794-1858).

Daniel was the son of John Daniel Deskins and Elizabeth Clark. John Daniel Deskins was born in 1696 in St. Paul, Stafford, Virginia, and died October 26, 1764, in Prince William, Virginia. Elizabeth Clark was born in 1698 in St. Paul, Stafford, Virginia, and died in 1744 in Russell, VA.
They married on April 2, 1724 and a fairly good marriage record still exists. Their children were: Ann (1725-1808 in Casewell, NC); Daniel (1726-1793); Margaret (1727 - September 1800); Rachael (1729-unknown); Mary Ruth (1730-1793 in Loudon, VA); JoAnna (1731-unknown); and John (1732-1801). John Daniel Deskin's sister helped him raise the children after Elizabeth died in 1744.
John Daniel married Francis McCarty on January 19, 1755, in Overwharton Park, Stafford, VA.
One record suggests John Daniel had a wife he married in 1717 and that she bore Mary Ruth in 1718. However, no name or dates for her are listed anywhere we have researched.

The John Daniel Deskins in our direct lineage was probably the son of John Deskins and Mary Thomas. However, there was also a John Daniel Deskins born to Daniel Deskins, Jr., who may be the same person. John Deskins and Daniel Deskins, Jr., were both sons of Daniel Deskins, Sr. and Mary Coleman. Several records point to our direct lineage being through John and Mary Deskins, but the dates on two birth and two death records make it quite possible that Daniel Deskins, Jr. married Mary Thomas Deskins after John Deskins died, if his death was really in 1688.
John was born 1650 in Old Rappahannock, VA and died March 5, 1688 (possibly 1698) in Old Rappahannock, VA. Mary's birth and death information are unknown, but there is one solid mention of her still being alive in a 1704 record.
(Option 1) John and Mary married about 1670 in Old Rappahannock, VA. They had at least one child: John Daniel Deskins (1 record says he was born in 1674; two records say birth was about 1696; his death was on October 26, 1764). Any other possible children's names were not yet found.
(Option 2) Daniel Deskins, Jr. married Mary Thomas Deskins shortly after John Deskins' death in 1688. They had at least one child: John Daniel Deskins (1 record says he was born in 1674; two better records say he was born about 1696; his death was on October 26, 1764).

Please note: whichever of the above options is true it does not break the lineage back to Daniel Deskins, Sr., Richard Coleman, and William Coleman.

John Deskins and Daniel Deskins, Jr. were both sons of Daniel Deskins, Sr. and Mary Coleman. Daniel Deskins, Sr. was born about 1625 in Old Rappahannock, Rappahannock County, VA. He died about March 1668 in Cats Point Creek, Old Rappahannock, Rappahannock County, VA. Mary Coleman was born about 1627 in Cats Point Creek, Old Rappahannock, Rappahannock County, VA and died in 1666 in Cats Point Creek, Old Rappahannock, Rappahannock County, VA.
Daniel and Mary married about 1650 in Old Rappahannock, Rappahannock County, VA. They had children. All were born in or near Old Rappahannock, Rappahannock County, VA, including: John (born about 1650; died March 5, 1688 or probably 1698); Elizabeth (1652-1752; lived to be either 99 or 100 which was rare back then); and Daniel Deskins, Jr. (about 1654 July 11, 1698 in Essex, VA).

Daniel Deskins parents are not yet known.

Mary Coleman's parents were Richard Coleman and Margaret Mascall. Richard Coleman was born about 1611 in Old Rappahannock, Rappahannock County, VA, and died in April 1673 in Old Rappahannock, Rappahannock County, VA. Margaret Mascall was born in 1612 in Essex, VA and died in 1670 in Essex, VA.
Richard and Margaret married about 1627 and had Mary and James Coleman.

Richard Coleman's father was William Coleman. He was born in Virginia date unknown.

Margaret Mascall's parents were Henrie Mascall and Katherine Steeunes. Both were born and died in England. Henrie (1590-1630) and Katherine (1594-1630). They married April 20, 1611 and Margaret was their only child. She was sent to America with direct relatives (quite possibly Katherine's sister) about 1625 or 1626.
