RE: Witt headstone pictures
Received a message from the person who posted the photos. Said that in the upper right corner of the photo was a marker for Charles saying he was with the Watertown Police Dept. They removed photos from all three memorials. Upset I think.

Witt headstone pictures
I have messaged the person who posted the photos & asked that they be removed from Lucritia & Charles' memorials. Hopefully she will do it.

The old monument you are leaning against in your photo looks as blank as the one of Judge Levi Hubbell. I really wanted to set up his biography in a responsible way, before someone else got there. Your Susan married a very political and controversial person. That is what got me entrenched on this website. Happy researching!

RE: Find A Grave Memorial# 146300307
In roughly 200 years a lot of burials have disappeared, and a lot of church and town records lost or destroyed through fire, flood and church mice. At first I thought findagrave was rather silly, but now it is beginning to seem that if one can maintain a bit of family privacy, it actually serves a useful documentary niche.

Find A Grave Memorial# 146300307
Hi Don,

Just a note to say that Albany Rural Cemetery checked every list and card, for Susan Linn DeWitt and Susan Linn, and found no Susan at all. They are a very careful organization, so she isn't there.

Best wishes,

RE: Findagrave Memorial #5788534
It gets very interesting.

Susan Linn married Simeon DeWitt and became Susan (Linn) Dewitt. Their daughter Susan Linn DeWitt married Levi Hubbell and became Susan Linn (DeWitt) Hubbell. is sometimes wrong. The date of Susan Linn (DeWitt) Hubbell's death is from the Hubbell genealogy and from her obituary in a Milwaukee newspaper of the day.

I would bet just about anything that her mother, Susan (Linn) DeWitt is no longer buried in Ithaca. In that Ithaca cemetery, according to the city hall records, there are three grave spaces. One is now occupied by Mary Linn DeWitt, who never married, and passed away in 1871. Her mother and father were moved to that damp vault under the church, and then her father Simeon was moved on to Albany Rural.

So either Susan stayed in that vault until it or she was gone, or she was moved later to that part of Albany Rural which was reserved for Dutch Reformed people, or she is actually buried with her husband and father, and her husband's second wife, but proper cemetery records were not kept.

That is what happened to her daughter Susan Hubbell. The cemetery, Forest Home, lost the records of her burial, and later found them, because I made an inquiry about her whereabouts. When her family (my cousins and me) found out what happened, we chipped in for a grave marker so she would never be lost again...

If I ever find where Simeon DeWitt's third wife is buried, I will let you know.

Findagrave is a sort of genealogy jungle, but it may have its uses, sorting entries by cemetery.

Best wishes,

Findagrave Memorial #5788534
Hi Don,

This is complicated.

I am writing to mention that I just added Simeon DeWitt's third wife Susan Linn DeWitt to your page, and then added some of her ancestors both by creating memorials and linking onto others. In the process, I noticed that a volunteer had added a grandson to Simeon and his second wife Jane Varick as his parents. I wrote the volunteer, but no response. Maybe we don't care, but maybe we do.

I am looking for Susan Linn DeWitt's burial place. She isn't in Ithaca - only their daughter Mary Linn DeWitt is in the family plot. I have a small map of the burials in Albany Rural Cemetery, which the cemetery sent me a few years ago. Simeon DeWitt, his father-in-law Rev. William Linn and Jane Varick are the only burials listed. I wrote Albany Rural Cemetery yesterday. has become a reference for reference librarians. I called the Tompkins County Public Library yesterday, to double check the Ithaca City Cemetery listings for Susan. This librarian started to answer my request by reading my own findagrave listing back to me over the phone...

Best wishes,
Dorothy Dreher

Glad to help. As I was finishing up, I discovered the request for Fanny's stone so it has already been added!
