Bio and Links
Bio Photo Find-a-Grave rocks! (Well most of the time.)

I hope everyone understands that this website is designed for GRAVE registration. The best possible situation is when someone goes to a cemetery and sees a stone, photographs it and makes a memorial if need be. But with the incredible amount of information on the internet about family history many people, including myself, are creating memorials based on cemetery locations listed on death certificates, local histories, obituaries, etc. The main point being though that you KNOW where that person is buried BEFORE you create a memorial.

A contributor should not be creating what I call PLACEHOLDERS, memorials set up to save the spots basically, to edit in the future when they MIGHT find out the burial location.

I wish it were mandatory for everyone to read the F.A.Q. before they are allowed to start entering information to this great website. It will solve a lot of issues.

-----------------

Let me know if you need a transfer if you can add more bio info. Hope everyone gets out there and photographs some stones - that is the main reason this site exists. Thanks.

I welcome edits even if its just a GPS, plot number, marker transcription or middle/maiden name etc. I like complete memorials.

Found this inscribed on a stone in Warwick, Ma.:

"Low in the ground my bed is made,
here in the dark alone I'm laid.
Depart my friends and let me rest,
I'm weary of this wilderness."

Found this on a find-a-grave profile:

Old Bones' profile poem"

Your tombstone stands among the rest;
Neglected and alone.
The name and date are chiseled out
On polished, marbled stone.
It reaches out to all who care
It is too late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist
You died and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you
In flesh, in blood, in bone.
Our blood contracts and beats a pulse
Entirely not our own.
Dear Ancestor, the place you filled
One hundred years ago
Spreads out among the ones you left
Who would have loved you so.
I wonder if you lived and loved,
I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot,
And come to visit you.

NOTE: A couple personal policies I follow:

1) I do not link to "burial location unknown" relatives. You're supposed to know where they are buried - that is the whole point of this website.

2) I do not list cause of death unless it is some tragic accident. Would you want to be remembered forever for dying from diabetes/alcohol abuse/suicide etc.? I find it a bit tacky - but to each their own.

Thanks

RE: Fix URL?
Ryan,
Just so you know, I sent an e-mail to support@findagrave.com and explained the problem and it appears they fixed it.

Good to know there's "somebody out there".

RE: Fix URL?
Ryan,
I created the woman's memorial & the man's was transferred to me. I figured I could fix it too once I had control of both, but hey, it's not working. The only other thing I can think to do is delete & start over.
Is there a tech help dept for FindAGrave? Anyway, thank you for your time.

Fix URL?
Hi Ryan,
Question: Is there a way to fix a "malformed URL"? I'm having a problem linking a husband & 2nd wife. When I click on her name on his site I get the "Not Found" message. If I enter his # on her memorial then her name shows up 2x on his site. Help!
Thank you in advance for any advice.

RE: Charles Degarmo - Brandon, Vt.
That's fantastic! It's always great when you can find and memorialize an entire group of siblings, especially when they are our own family. I have two great aunts and an uncle (siblings of my great grandmother) who I cannot find the cemetery for so I can appreciate how that can be frustrating.

Hey Ryan, sorry it took so long to get back to you, I could not find the transcript images I copied for that cemetery when I was at The Berkshire Atheneum this past winter. I have attached the page where he is listed and am going to transfer Charles & Mary to you, hopefully that is ok. I was up in Brandon a month ago photographing one of the cemeteries in town it is a VERY long trip, almost 3 hours from me and I won't be back up there any time soon. Jen Snoots lives right there as does Janet Muff, I am sure they could run over and photograph the memorial for you, they are both wonderful ladies to work with. In case you forgot Charles is Find A Grave Memorial# 141525340. Jim

RE: Merrill Brill
Hi Ryan,
Really like the site. Have known about it for quite some time but decided to join since I spend a lot of time doing genealogy research and also spend a lot of time in cemeteries. I live literally right next door to a cemetery and noticed that most of the graves weren't listed on the site so I've started working on that one along with filling in photos of a few others that I visit. Most of my neighbors are military and thought they really needed to be listed on the site. Some of my friends think it's odd but they have gotten used to it!
Oh & thanks for the link for the familysearch.org site! It really helps fill in the blanks since I want to be sure I connect the right people.

Thanks again!
Cathy

Wow!

Thanks for the notes. I failed to transcribe the headstone correctly: Frances' mother WAS Margaret.

Also, I have no idea why I linked Frances to the wrong spouse, but that should be corrected as well.

I appreciate your offer on transferring the memorials. I have been focused more on St. Bernard's in recent months. At times it may be easier for me to be able to edit the info myself (and less of a pain for you to process all of it...although having you catch my mistakes is great!)

I'll leave it up to you.

Thanks again,

Bill
