Hello-I have traced these grandparents back through their daughter, Elizabeth who is not listed here, and her son Thomas Williams. Elizabeth married Timothy Williams. DO you have any more information about this part of the family? Pictures or drawings? I'm also trying to find where Amatoy would have been a cheif and where his family came from. Thank you,
|Debbie Jobe||RE: Eldon Ambrose Knox|
Thanks for the correction! I appreciate you quick response! Have a great day!

You also list his birth year as 1640 in the heading, then give his birth year as 1660 in his biographical paragraph. I'm assuming this is a typo, but one which needs to be corrected. Again, he was not Cherokee, but Shawnee. The Shawnee in the early 17th century were run out of the Ohio Valley, which was their country, by the Iroquois, after several years of war between the two Tribes. The Iroquois country (New York state) had become depleted of fur due to the European fur trade.This put pressure on the Iroquois, who had guns provided by the Europeans, to push out other Tribes from their countries, including the Shawnee. The Shawnee moved south into Cherokee country (Tennessee and Kentucky, specifically) and became friends with the Cherokee. One of my ancestors, Thomas Caesar Greenwood Skiagunsta, later went as a delegate with the Cherokee to England to negotiate with the British. Later white census takers in Cherokee country assumed all Indians in that area were Cherokee, although the two Peoples spoke different languages, and categorized them all as "Cherokee". It appears that you have made the same mistake.

Amatoya Moytoy was my ninth great granduncle. He was not Cherokee, but SHAWNEE. His mother was Pride SHAWNEE woman Cornstalk Carpenter and his father was Thomas "Cornplanter" "the Immigrant" Carpenter, who was from Plymouth, Devon, England. Therefore Amatoya "Tom" Moytoy was half Shawnee. Please see the US Find a Grave sites for his parents and correct your erroneous post, which has numerous Shawnee descendants of Amatoya thinking their Cherokee!

I have added a picture to Mr. Bowland's memorial, also his wife's. Thought you might like to see it.
