It all started with Deep Branch Baptist in Lumberton, NC and Clover Hill Methodist in Lawndale, NC on my mom's side and Walnut Grove Baptist in Moravian Falls, NC on my dad's side. It was amazing to me that I was related to that many people buried in those cemeteries.|

|Phoebe Pollitt||Lumbee nurses|
Thank you for so much information. 3 other early Lumbee nurses were Eva Brewington Sampson (1932-2014) who graduated from nursing school in 1970 and spent a 25 year career heading student health services at UNC-P. and 2 military nurses: Mary Brayboy who nurses in OK during the VietNam war and Brenda Finnicum who started service in the US Army nurse Corps in 1978.
I want to find out more about an unnamed nurse in Dr. Malinda Lowery's book Lumbee Indians in the Jim Crow South where on page 161 she writes
"The project (Pembroke Farms) also employed a nurse, the farm's only permanent Indian employee. Her duties centered on curbing the area's malaria, tuberculosis, syphilis and other diseases through treatment and education".
I have written Dr. Lowery and haven't received a reply. Do you know who she is talking about?
Thanks again for all your great information.
|Phoebe Pollitt||Viola Lowery Armstrong|
I have a history of nursing in NC website www.nursinghistory.appstate.edu and I very much want to add information about early Lumbee Registered Nurses. I understand that Viola Lowery Armstrong was the first. Do you know of others? perhaps the first Lumbee nurse to work in Robeson County/Pembroke/Scotland County area?
Also, do you have a photograph of nurse Armstrong or know how I can read her obituary?
Thanks a lot and sorry for all the quesitons.
|Ronnie Lee Brothers||Old Ebenezer UMC Cemtery - Hemphills|
I would really appreciate a copy of the Ebenezer cemetery headstones, that include Melinda Burgin Hemphill and Mary Ann Mackie Hemphill that you have posted on Find A Grave, to share on my Ancestry family file.
My 2nd great-grandmother was Mary Ann Hemphill, wife of James Lette/Leach McEntire.
Thank you for taking the time to photograph and document the headstones at Old Ebenezer UMC cemetery. I visited the cemetery years ago, but my old camera took very poor photos.

Do you happen to know what percent Indian (Lumbee?) that Lottie was?
Were both of her parent full-blood Indians, or just one? Which one?
|Brian Curdy||Max Curdy and Ann Hinkson|
Thankyou for the corrections, documentation, and suggestions which I have applied. My paternal uncle, Max Agassiz Curdy passed away in Icard in 2008 and my first cousin Ann (Curdy) Hinkson passed away two weeks later. When I left the US Marines in 1980 I moved back to the "old country" (Switzerland) wher I Married and settled down. The Curdy name is a common one here. Although I corresponded with Ann and members of her congregation it was hard to get information and the funeral home informed me of "cremations". Thankyou for helping me get the memprial data straight. I dearly miss both Uncle Max and Cousin Ann - Sincerely, Brian Edouard Curdy. PS: Please let me know if I can be of further help to you in your research - and thankyou again for your generosity and devotion -Brian

Thank you so much for the photo.
I didn't think she had a stone. If and when you go back keep your eye out for other Jones and Lunsfords. When my health and the weather is better I hope to visit the grave. Heat felt thanks

Hi Melanie. Thank you for your hard work & efforts. I have some information to add to the Children of James & Edna Sampson. They had a daughter named Atelia Sampson as well, She is my Great Grandmother & is still living at the age of 99 soon to celebrate her 100th birthday in September. If you would like anymore information concerning additional family members feel free to contact me. Reading thru your post for the ancestors of James & Edna it seems you & I share the same Great Grandparents several generations back. I am so excited and thankful to have stumbled across your work.
